Location: Atlanta,Ga. | That would be a "country artist"...14 fret, slimmer neck, than a normal classical,artist size bowl...GREAT GUITARS...one of ovations better efforts!! I love mine,it is a 1971 early model and it sounds and plays great... |

How do we come up with Country Artist based on the resources available about Model numbers. I know it IS a Country Artist.. I'm just saying, based on published info... My real question is... Who wants to help put the MASTER list together...
1624-4 =
FIRST DIGIT = 1 = 1 (always)
TYPE = 6 = Acoustic electric roundback
BOWL DEPTH = 2 = Artist bowl, 5 1/8" deep
MODE = 4 = Josh White ???
DASH
COLOR = 4 = Natural
How do I translate this into Country Artist? |

Location: Scotland | I think the system started to fall apart in the early 70's once they had more than 4 basic models.
In the case of the Country Artist it's 1, 6 (electro) 2 (Shallow or artist bowl depth) 4 which in this case refers to both the Country Artist & confusingly the Folklore/Josh White. According to the Carter book The Country Artist replaced the Josh White as the #4 model in '71. The Josh White was then reintroduced as the Folklore in 72 also as #4 (Folklore would be 1114 or 1614 as it's deep bowl, C Artist 1124 0r 1624)

I would also question whether the first digit is "always" 1, as I'm sure a number of current models do not have 1 as a first digit. For example the current Folklore & Country Artist models are 6773 & 6774. Apparently these are special order, but those numbers do not appear to fit with the usual 4 digit system

Location: Zion, Illinois | The Country Artist is the next Ovation on my list of things to get. I use to have a classical guitar, love to play folk-finger picking style music on it. It broke many many moons ago. I'll just have to keep an eye on E-Bay for one.
Talking about E-Bay. I saw an Ovation Custom Legend go for $275 this morning. I almost went for it, but I just bought an 1858 12-string from E-Bay last week and I don't want to make the wife too mad at me.

Location: Atlanta,Ga. | Miles, forget going by the ovation book for the most part.The models got all mixed up after a while...The josh white never was assigned a model number.It simply had "Josh white" writen in the label.This was the case for all the early models.The model name was written in the label with no model number.Then later on they went to a model number system..
I have gone to using my early catalogs and price sheets for detailed info on models and specs.Hopefully those are correct |

If it has a model number, then the Model number chart may work, or possibly there is a cut-off date of when models were made. This is all easily programmed, but I need parameters to start with. I am also checking some other resources. My question lately has been how do they keep track of Warantee info? Basically ANY number is a valid serial number. |

the first number was usually a 1, sometimes T for AAA and S for second.
The second number was 1 for acoustic, 6 for acoustic electric, 2 for electric and then later 7 for a different preamp
the third number was bowl depth 1 deep, 2 shallow
the fourth number was the model 1 balladeer, 2 custom bd, 3 classic, 4 josh white-later folklore, 5 12 str, 6 spruce top classic, 7 deluxe bd- later legend 8 and 9 open at first
when it was a shallow bowl the 4 was country artist and the 7 was the GC (at that time the 18 became the GC 12str)
later the custom legend came and that was 1119 and 1619
then the other preamps came and cutaways and other models and the whole system went down the kerfluey ( |
