I have just inherited a Glen Campbell Ovation serial No. 0051487. As far as I know my Dad bought it new around about 76'. I've tried to find out more about the guitar but have not come up with much. I took it to the local music shop and the owners face lite up when I took it out of the case, but he didn't much about old guitars. I also need to get it insured, has anyone got an idea about its value? (it's in pretty good condition)

Cheers in advance

Dear John,
I'll let some of the others tell you the current market price. If it is a 6 string and you want to let it go there is a guy in Tallahassee who has been looking for one for years. If you're interested let me know and I'll put the two of you together.

Ah yes, the 'ol "what's it worth?" question. If you need it appraised for insurance, than that is exactly what you need to do. Find a guitar dealer that does appraisals, I think there are some who frequent the board, and I'm sure they will contact you. Checking completed Items on eBay is useful for more popular models, and also www.gbase.com is a good resource.

This post wasn't all that useful I'm sure, but you made me think... and that doesn't happen often.

time for a nap...

If the cracks are in the finish only then forget about them, it's not affecting the sound and a refinish is a pain & can be very expensive. If the top is split it's a good idea to have the cracks stabilised as they can get worse over time. Top cracks in 70's Ovations are quite common. They usually occur on the treble-side between the bridge & lower bout. I bought a '72 legend ridiculously cheap because of a top crack. Cost about £50 to repair (15 years ago) & hasn't moved since. Glen Campbell electro's in good condition with an OHSC fetch about £450 privately in the UK & are worth every penny, dealers ask about £695. Lose about £100-£150 for an acoustic-only model.

Gruhn's is the worst place in the world you can get an ovation apreasal..George gruhn dosnt know squat about ovation and he does not care either. He has told me he would rather not have them in his store...If you had a Gibson or Martin, then he would show interest......

A friend of mine in Nashville refers to Gruhn as "The Sergeant Bilko of the vintage guitar trade" Quite apt I reckon.

Sorry guys,,,,I didn't know gruhn had "head up the butt syndrome" I've never had an ovation appraised with him. I guess I should keep my mouth shut untill I know what I'm talking about. I was wandering why no one had mentioned the site. I guess now I know....again,, I apologize if I offended anyone with my ignorance of gruhn and ovation. Harlan

gruhn is well respected and knowlegeable in some circles but he is far from infallible.
