every guitar maker has their own head design, but ovations standard design, not the intricate (and i think beautiful) carved ones, must have an interesting story to go along with it's shape. with it's asymmetry and graceful lines it says to me, in a classy subtle way, "we are not like the rest" kind of sensous instead of geometric. any comments?

I agree. Hell, everything about Ovations says that. But then I'm not one to talk. I also like to drive cars with rotary engines.

Interesting question... Before someone posts the real answer, if there is one, I'm going to hazzard a guess that it may have been inspired by a way to protect the tuners a little from being bumped as so often happens when playing. I'm curios tho what the "real" reason was.

Good guess. There is an answer and it's in the Ovation book by Walter Carter.

Russ:
Don't lie. With your busted foot, you can't run. Hobble down to the library? Anyway, the guy who designed the headstock noted that the pegheads on other guitars pulled the strings to the outside. He designed the Ovation headstock so that the sting pull was more straight. Then he made the lip to look like a vase. He didn't know anything about guitars (he designed letterheads and graphics designs for annual reports, I think). Not very scientific, but a good story.

By the way, did you get my email and photo?

Russ, I got a book for you.
Chuck McDonough designed the peghead and the production one is slightly different from the original, more produceable. I don't know where he got his Ideas but have a look at a Wilkanowski guitar from the 30's. Too close to be coincidence, but then again.....???
Chuck also did most of the original Adamas concept design, head, heel, bridge, epaulettes etc. Not the braces or mechanics, just the aesthetics.

ok, you caught me, i hopped which rattled what is left of my grey matter and turned me around.

i never got anything from you via e mail paul. i'm not surprised however. this is a country that went from burros and shouting over the back wall to the internet and air travel in a couple of years. try just a low byte test to see if it is the file size or something that prevented it from coming through. thanks even if it doesn't come through, but i hope it does. those planet inlays sound great----gotta see em.
