Well, I drove to Lansing MI from Chicago today, to play around at Elderly Instruments and pick up my first high-end guitar. I'm in love with it. The pictures on the Elderly web site do not do it justice. I'll post pictures of it soon.

I do have some questions about its setup that maybe some of you can answer.

I've read Bill's note about neck adjustments, as well as the little guide that came with the guitar.

Question 1: Bill says "Hold down the bass E string at the first and where the neck joins the body. At the mid point between those two there should be about .005" of a gap." The manual says between .005" and .015". Anybody have any idea how to eyeball that? I plan to get a good straightedge at my local art supply store tomorrow, but .005 is less than 1/128 of an inch. I can see light above the 5th fret when I'm holding the 6th string at 1 and 14, but not much. Is there any better way to measure it?

Question 2: Manual advises waxing the neck. Does one wax the fingerboard? The bridge? What's the best way to treat the carbon graphite top? The bowl? Chamois for the top, and paper towels for the bowl? If crud gets on these surfaces (which I hope it won't, but crud happens), can a damp cloth be used since these surfaces aren't wood? Should the top get waxed, or should guitar polish be used on it?

3. I find the chromatic tuner hard to use. When I strike a string, usually the desired note flashes momentarily on the tuner, then another one several steps away... and then all the other notes flicker. The OK light only ticks every second. I have confirmed my tuning with another electronic tuner, but can't seem to get the tuner on the preamp to give me clear readings. I have replaced the battery. Is this typical behavior for these? Using 12th fret harmonics for a purer tone doesn't seem to make any difference. Any other suggestions?

Adjustments.
get s 6 inch scale from a heardare store that shows 1/64" While you're there have hin mic the scale for the thickness. Probably .01 to .o15 that will be your 10 to 15 1000th feeler guage.
Wax the neck when you change the strings, do the f/'b and bridge and whatever else you like. Make sure it's all rubbed off when you restring. this should be on exposed wood surfaces. The top has finish so a furniture wax will do.

phaseshift, really a great looking guitar. i like how the cross weave top changes color at different angles. maybe i will be lucky enough to see one in person someday.

one word of advice-------if you are playing the 17th fret in public, you might be accused of playing with uranus.

 I guess I should have asked about fret board enemas instead of waxing.

That apparent change in color is really a specular reflection caught by the carbon fibers. It's not so visible in normal room light, but the flash of my camera brings it out, and I imagine good stage lighting will show it off.

In reguards to .005 being equal to 1/128" This is very advanced math and beyond me. I asked my financial guy and he said that a RCH is .004 so this measurement would be ever so slightly more than that. Hope that helps.

Never ask financial guys questions. In my corporate days, they kept talking about roi. They never could tell what a reference about french kings had to do with finance. Bet they didn't play guitars either!

What's a RCH?

As for math, I can barely add 2 and 2, but when I use my little calculator and punch in 1/128=, it says 0.0078125.

RCH is a very precise method of measurement that relies on both experience and some of the mathematical theories of euclid and einstein.

i thought RCH was only used amongst machinests. i am very pleased to find this level of understanding amongst my musician buddies as well. here in mexico they use the BCH which is the metric equivalent and .004" larger. many years ago i often used this standard to calibrate my feeler gauges.

gosh Russ you must have been a modern machinist. We only had Jo blocks for calibration, and they kept those in the refrigerator. :D

Seriously Phaseshift,

A dollar bill is 0.004 and a common business card is 0.011. Close enough for government work.

Harold :)
