my grandson has gotten the guitar bug and wants to play "rocaroll" with grandpa and the band. of course nothing would thrill me more, so i'd like to buy him a good entry level 3/4 sized guitar to fit his smaller hands. i remember how frustrating it was learning on a bad guitar and want him to stay enthusiastic until he is ready for a guitar from grandpas stash. can anybody coach me on this? i'd like an ac/el so he can plug in and play when he visits but can practice and play unplugged too.

thanks russ

I hate to be sacrilegious (sp?) here, but I'd look at a Baby Taylor. I think that they are wonderful first guitars. If you want to stay with Ovations, look at the Applaus 3/4 size steel and nylon strings. I don't think the unplugged tone is quite as open as the BT, but they are good instruments.

I agree. Even the non-top'o line Ovations for beginers are great. For me, the worth wasn't realized until almost 25 years later. I bought a Medallion (Matrix) back in '75ish. It was a factory second at that. Sure I learned on it, but because of it's construction, I STILL HAVE IT. It still plays pretty good too. It's been around the world. That's one of the real perks of the Ovation I think. A Taylor or Martin or something like that.... a Kid isn't going to be so quick to trot it off to college, the beach, friends houses, camping etc... Afterall it's a piece of furnature. At times I'm embarrased that I "beat on it" as much as I did... but then again, if I had bought an expensive and delicate guitar (even an Ovation) I would have not had so much enjoyment out of it... because I would have always been worrying about the potential nics and dings. Now older and wis.... well older anyway, I own an Adamas, and a Collectors. I take extreme care of my Guitars now, but when there is a party.. "Annie" comes out to play. And yes "she" (the guitar for clarification) was named after the John Denver song.

Ha! I used to date three girls in college named Karen. I would always pick up the phone and say "Hi Karen". Odds were that I had it right.

if you want a dozen named maria let me know. except when you answer the phone practice saying hola mi amor, that covers all names.

thanks for the guitar tips. i want to start him round and i don't want him to be afraid to play it. he is a full blown 10 year old who would shy away from anything he had to kneel in front of. i don't wan't the "wash your hands WITH SOAP and practice the piano for an hour or you cant play with your friends" routine. sure turned ME off! i'll let him ease into appreciation of finer things when he is ready.
