Time for some shameless self promotion. Next Sunday April 14 at the SJ expo center in Pennsauken will be the SJ guitar show. 10-3 if you need directions you can click on the link on the bottom of this post.
We usually have a great time at the show. There are usually between 30-40 vendors and 500-800 people that walk through the door. There is always a ton of stuff to look at and buy or trade.
This show we have been given a Hamer Echotone to give away to some lucky person who attends the show. If you want to meet Kim Keller he will be there to pull the winner.
Miles has also threatened to be there and well he needs to pick up some equipment from me to that will be a good thing. I will have my usual menagerie of stuff which will include some Ovations to check out.
A good time i usually had by all.
If you are in the neighborhood on FRiday night at the South West Grille in Sewell NJ the Hamer fan club will be getting together for an evening of the blues and on saturday night the East Coast Hamer fan club jam will take place. If you stop by on saturday you will even get a chance to see my band "Lost Art" play a short set. So I have an action packed week set for me so if you don't see me around the message boards very often it is not because I don't love you all but because I am probably trying to handle some crisis.

Good Luck Al, maybe someone will walk in with a slothead that was under uncle willie's bed and want to get $200 for it, not a penny less, but you got to pay cash.

Thanks CWK2
We always if nothing else have fun at the show.
Although I have played several I have never owed an early slot head adamas and would love to. I have owned more than my share of Adamas I and II's.
I did once buy an old ampeg scroll headstock electric bass from a 6'8 old guy who walked into the show with it strapped to his back with NO case and he started to whack it into the door jams. I followed him accross the room 5 minutes later where about 2 dz people asked him about the bass but did not buy it. the bass had he rick dako p bass pickup mod done to it. When I asked him how much he told me 200 bucks but only if I took the amp with it....the amp was a hohner bass amp but I bought it and then he insisted upon throwing in some other stufff that I really don;t remember. sold all that stuff still have the bass my wife plays it on occasion.

Al;

I also recieved your shameless self-promotion in my mail. Thanks.

Being a fellow "Jersey Boy", I'd love to come down and meet you and check out the show (maybe bring down my SlotHead for you to check out).

I'll TRY to come down, but I have a gig the night before in Lake Hopatcong (strangely enough, we have this monthly gig where we play live at a go-go bar while the dancers are on - very bizzarre!) so I probably won't get home 'til like 4 a.m., so a two hour Sunday morning, post-gig NJ Turnpike drive isn't one of the "few of my favorite things". Maybe I can talk my girlfriend into driving down while I "snooze". We'll see...

Yeah Russ, it ain't easy!

A majority of the clubs here in Jersey close at 2am, so they want you to play from either 9:30 - 1:30 or 10:00 - 2:00.

Then comes the WORSE part (in my opinion) of being tired and sweaty, and dismantling everything (once everyone has completed the race to "last call") and packing entirely TOO MUCH equipment (damn drummers!) into four Japanese sedans at 3am.
(I'm getting too old for this crap!)

With summertime comin', I gotta try to find some early evening acoustic outdoor "tiki bar" gigs on Long Beach Island. That's WAY more my speed!

its alot easier here. 8:30 til 12. the only thing i pack up is my guitar. the rest stays at the club and is provided by the owner. i live 1 block away and am usually home by 12:15. the other club is always 4 pm - 7 pm and is 2 blocks away. the rest for me are parties and jam sessions. we play allot but with a "manana" attitude. i'm off to a musicians beach party in about 15 min. all acoustic. hope there is plenty of shade.

Cliff... (and anyone else)
One word, "ROADIE!!!" I mean get some kid who wants the "experience." You can usually find one at the local place that gives instrument lessons. Ask the teacher to recommend a someone. It helps if they are at least 18, both with maturity and knowledge. Invite'em to a gig or rehearsal, meet, chat, explain what you need. Carry, set-up, tune etc.. or whatever. Don't talk "pay" if you don't need too. Keep him pepsi and dogs for the night and At the end of the night give'em a 5 or 10 spot. He/She will love it.
Your thinking "5-10 bucks and some cokes", thats not much??? Well he's thinking and tell'in his friends.. "Hey, I carry a couple pieces of gear and get into the club for free and get free drinks all night, hang out and they tip me too"

It nice to help out up and coming musicians too.

Yeah Miles, I know.
We tried it a couple of times in the past without much success.

Perhaps it's time to try again.

Really NICE collection of solid bodies by the way!
Do you sell trade these things as part of your business (like Al does) or do you just collect/play? VERY impressive collection!!!

Being primarily an acoustic guitarist, I was always somewhat "semi-aware" of Ovation's solid bodies, but never really "followed" them as far as model names and such. I've been contemplating picking up an electric (maybe a "12-er")and a bass. Perhaps I should consider keeping it "all in the family".

How "playable" are the electrics?

Did Ovation ever make a fretless bass?

Ay!!! Al!

Don'chu know we ain s'pose t'tawk 'bout tings like dat!?!?!?

No, it's not the Bada Bing! (but it's close).
(Actually, Bada Bing is really a place called Satin Dolls).

It's funny. I once told someone that if you took the opening title sequence of "The Sopranos" and watched it BACKWARDS, you'd know what my morning commute looks like.
A lot of the "urban/industrial" exterior scenes are shot around where I work.
For instance, "Satriale's" Pork Store (where a lot of the sidewalk "sit downs" take place) is really a vacant building a couple of blocks from my office.
I've often pondered going over there one night with a ladder and a socket wrench and make off with the sign. Would probably yield a nice price on ebay.

Fhaggeddabouditt!!!!

My wife is a big Sopranos fan...Unfortunately it reminds me of some people I grew up with so I am not quite as taken by it. I grew up on the mean streets of Camden NJ and back in the day before the city became one big ghetto well we had buddy's steak shop instead of satrieles and Dimatteo's bar instead of badda bing etc etc etc you get the picture.....

by the way if any of you are in the area this weekend stop by the guitar show (shameless self promotion fullfilled in this postng)

Al: I grew up on the mean streets of Paterson, NJ so I know of where you speak. (Does anybody remember Joe Clarke - the character that Morgan Freeman played in "Lean On Me"? Well, before he was principal of Eastside High, I had him as a grammar school teacher!!!
The stuff that used to go on!)
Before it turned into the friggin' "WarZone" it is today, Paterson used to be a nice small city of ethnic enclaves (I for one was a Russian/Dutch-German kid growing up in a predominantly Italian neighborhood in the 60's/70's Ahhh the days! -Ahhh the FOOD!!!).

The show's a "possibility" for Sunday.

Bill: "...sunshine and relaxation..."
Been a "Jersey Boy" far too long.
As soon as my 16 year old daughter finishes college and "child support" is over, and alimony is finished with (...please, God....), I have two words emblazoned in my brain. . . "Florida"....."Keys"......

Russ: I'm already researching Puerto Viagra, so all I can say is "..be careful what you wish for..."! Hell, I even know a couple of Major Seventh chords. . . so I might even be considered one o' them there gotdam ver-chew-oh-sohs!

cliff, i really miss all of the ethnic variety, especially when it comes to food. it is just starting to happen here but not even close to back east. my parents were from new york and my grand father owned a butcher shop/grocery store in utica which was a real melting pot. i grew up eating everything from golubkis to chow mein.

hey, if you know major 7th's we could start a blues class while you're here. really cliff, you would have to be really bad not to fit in, and you still would always get an invitation to the fiestas. it is really laid back here, and being mellow and friendly is all it takes. i never accept money for playing. most of us gringos help kids and old folks instead but the bass player amd drummer are mexican and accept money for the regular gigs, but always are there for any benefits we hold even without pay. we raised money to build a senior center here and have helped some kids that had some medical problems the parents couldn't afford to treat. even got the mexican government to participate financially in both projects.

when i have fun playing music with friends that makes people laugh, dance and clap and after it is all over someones life is a little better you can't put a dollar value on it. and if i need a special permit of "favor", it happens easily and with a smile.

don't get me started on Joe Clarke..I taught in Camden for 14 years I can tell you MANY horror stories and that is why by mutual agreement I don't do that any more. Biggest favor anyone ever did me in my life...

I loved growing up in the city and would have stayed but living with a flack jacket 24/7 was not my idea of a good time....

As for food...my best friend across the street was both polish and italian I learned to eat ravioli canoli pasta and stuffed shells and stuffed peppers over there. At my house he learned to eat golumki Kystiki pierogi and kielbasa. It was a good cultural exchange. His family also taught me how to make homemade pizza... Damn you just can't get that good polish rye bread any more but I know a few places for great ethnic Italian goodies. Stop making me think of all this good stuff...where I grew up every corner had a church bar or family owned grocery or some other store. It WAS a nice place.

so in an act of Shameless self promotion like they used to do for the old Atco dragway radio ads.....

SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY
SJ guitar show.......BE THERE

Did I happen to mention that aside from the great deals on gear and the Hamer Guitar giveaway that it is a tradition for my Mom to sell home baked goodies at the show? She usually makes chocolate chip cookies.apple cake, mini cheese cakes, sometimes pumkin pie ( my absolute favorite) and other assorted goodies. Some folks just go to the show to stock up on calories. Make your selection early she usually sells out .....

See you sunday at the South Jersey Guitar show
