What's the next Ovation that people are thinking of buying?

I'm seriously thinking about an old Thunderhead, blonde or brown sunburst. I'm probably a year away from buying (my wife says we're getting new carpeting first).

What about the rest of you?

I've been talking to Ovations UK distributor about a custom-shop guitar, my new studio has put that project on hold for a while but I will commission it sometime later this year. It'll be an old style 12-fret Folklore but with a mid-bowl cutaway body, old-style Custom Legend trim & the latest pre-amp. I'm drooling already. I'm seriously considering a couple of steel-string & a nylon string viper, & I'd grab a Preacher Deluxe if one came along at the right price, just to say I've got one example of every solidbody.

TWELVE string, MOST definitely!!
(I've ALWAYS wanted one.)

The local Guitar Center has a nice, black Legend-12 hanging in the "acoustic room" that I visit every so often for Saturday afternoon "trysts".

If my &#$*&*&^$& Toyota didn't just hit me with $1,200 in "head" work, it'd be mine!!

Although, after playing one of Al's Adamas 12's, I may becoming "fickle".

1). Adamas Q, to try, if I like it I'll buy it.

2). A very early (1966?!) Ovation Balladeer deep glossy (shiny) bowl, three piece spruce top (nicely aged!). In excellent+-near mint-mint condition. ;)

Paul T:

Are you going to specify any specific type of bracing in that highly tweaked Folklore? I really think that the A bracing Ovation uses is highly superior in sound quality to anything they used before.

As to custom shop dreaming, I was just telling my wife that if we win the lottery, I'd love to have Ovation take my old Country Artist and put a blue old style Adamas top on it. That guitar would sound wonderful.

Some day, an Adamas!

For now, I need a decent classical guitar to round out my humble collection. Passed on a Martin last year and regretting not snatching it up.

Sam,
OK you can have the Super Legend. Here's the deal. Since it has my wife's necklace as inlays she'll be pissed if I sell it. (I've already had this pointed out to me) You can have the guitar, you just gotta pay for the divorce. How's that sound?

I just got mine so I can't dream... OK I can dream. I hit the "big" stores often when I'm on the road and "test drive" Ovations. Tampa, Mars store near the airport yesterday had several. Now I don't want to start New vs. Old... Ovations. This store had problems. They had guitars on the wall that had "no dealer prep". Nothing sounded good. I was pulling the moisture packs out of sound holes on 3 different models. And took an Adamas to the manager and asked him to check this guitar out because it had a bad buz pluged in... The working bee had 5 weeks on the job...
If this day was my only experiance with Ovation... it would have not been good.
I blame the store.
I can now see why a few on this bulletin board shout old vs. new.
That said my April 11th purchase (2002) would make any and all of you smile.

Al, interesting point about the bracing. My old Folklore was X-braced & I loved the sound of that guitar so I was going to go with that. But I don't think we necessarily have a good memory for sounds. I prefer the sound of my friend's A-braced Legend to my old VT-braced example, so you could be right. I guess I'll need to talk to some tech-heads at the factory. Incidentally I got the idea from a guitar owned by David Soul (of Starskey & Hutch fame) which was a custon legend-trimmed Folklore, also Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics owns a black Custom Legend-trimmed Country Atrist, very cool looking guitar.

Paul:
Not wanting to be picky, but it was me, not Al that made the comment on the bracing.

Al, that's not a personal attack. Just teasing.

Paul, the reason I made the point, is that I've got a Legend with the old bracing pattern. I love the guitar for sentimental reasons, but don't care for the sound at all. I've played Legends with the A bracing and it makes a huge differnce in the quality of the sound. A buddy of mine, a few years back, bought an old Folklore and just raved about the sound. To me, it sounded just like my Legend. About a year ago, my friend bought a 5 or 6 year old Elite. He realized the difference in the sound and sold the Folklore shortly thereafter.

Just give it some thought. As long as you are having Ovation build you a guitar, you might as well have exactly the guitar you want. You will also need to think about tuners (chrome or gold, sealed or exposed) and electronics. Lastly, think about the finish on the neck. I love the older Ovations sealed finish. But Ovation moved away from that starting in the late 1980's. If I was having a guitar built, I'd also get that neck rather than the current satin finish.

Food for thought. Or digesting and crapping out.

Paul, sorry. I guess I'd read one of Al's posts & then yours & my typing finger was working faster than my brain. I think the original Folklore, given the bridge position created by the 12-fret neck, sounded great with the X-brace, but I haven't owned mine for about 20 years, so as I suggested my "sound" memory could be playing tricks. My own 72 Legend is VT braced, it has a Sunrise soundhole pickup, massive strings and an action you can drive a truck under, deliberately I might add. I've seen seasoned "wooden-players" shit themselves when they hear the slide tone I get from it, it almost sounds like a Weissenborn. It's a fine road warrior but, my buddy's A-braced early '80's legend sounds nicer for non-slide playing. It'll be a while before my good lady will forget how much I just spent on some RPG absorber/diffusers for the studio, so I have time to think about it & talk to Andy Schlosser & the guys at the factory.

My Mando & SMT have the satin necks which I hated at first but kinda like the feel of now, all my other Ovations are gloss necks and they just look so much classier, another point to think about, thanks.

The folklore has an X brace. What makes them sound so good is the 12 fret neck, it puts the bridge 2 frets further back in the top giving a fuller sound. I used the same concept on the Longneck which is a 28 something" scale. Esentially it has two extra frets and you tune it to D so the string tension is the same and the bridge is further back in the top and you still have a 14 fret neck. THen you drop the bass string down to C and have a big time!

Bill, that's exactly what I said, the bridge position created by the 12-fret neck is crucial. That's why I intend to custom-order a 12 rather than 14 fret guitar. Same concept with Martin 12-fret dreadnoughts, I love the 12-fret DS shape & sound, I can take or leave a 14 fret dreadnought. Equally give me a 12-fret 000 over an OM or 14 fret 000.

I think that his point (I think) is that he is describing the next guitar he's getting, which is the original line on this discussion.

cwk2, We'll have to talk in a new line about the longnecks. I had forgotten about them.

They were pretty cool. I thought they'd dropped them as being too nitchy but there's a post from some guy who got a Celebrity version of it. Must be good if it's being sent overseas!
The other instruments to cover would be the mandos (as in lynn and chellow) Actually the 10,000th Adamas is a silver mandochellow (or is that cheller?)
