Just wondering? What kind of polish should I use on my guitars? I once heard to stay away from regular furniture polish like Pledge, is there something I should know? What would a "guitar" polish do that a regular polish wouldn't?

I'm just trying to baby my Elite.

some furniture polishes have abrasives in them so you will get those fine scratches on the top. I polished my Les paul that I got in high school with pledge every week and it has those scratches. I would suggest dunlop 65 or martin guiar polish.

Just as a note I never polish my guitars now.

I just started using the Dunlop 65. I used to use anything that was around, but I started seeing roadies, luthiers, guitar techs using this little bottle so I investigated. The stuff is great, and doesn't seem to leave any residue, nice shine.. easy to use, not expensive, and a little goes a long way. Musicians Friend or other places has it online.

Hi Bradley,

Well if CWK2 has any suggestion(s), I'd bet he'll say "Roofing Nails". I strongly urge discretion if you choose to follow this course. Not only will it polish the living daylights out of your fine elite's top but it is also guaranteed to remove all pick scratches as well as dirt and debris. :D :D :D

.......tacking on.......

I'm quite surprised that Alpep didn't recommend "Toilet Paper" for this. Hmmmmmm, maybe it's his little "SECRET", you think? :p :p

The purpose of this group is to share information & discuss a common interest, not petty sniping. Al had his say, you had yours, that should be the end of it. If we leave the schoolyard bickering to the other guitar 'boards we'll all get along just fine.

WHAPPP! Across the nuckles with the ruler! from "School Marm" Paul. Must not forget that courtesy and respect IS a two way street. I surely have not forgotten and am more than willing to observe The Golden Rule nine times out of nine! I try my best to share info as I can where I can. I haven't been on this board a whole bunch at all since Ovations are but a small part of my rather large and expensive collection (but that's not the issue here), hence my Junior Member status. I've been "into" roundbacks since the way early 70's and really do appreciate their tone over squarebacks. Bottom line, they're just guitars, fercryinoutloud.

I'm appauled.. Ovations are LIFE ITSELF!!!

<>

As a matter of fact.. A little known truth (fib) is that the creation of life is what insprired the oveerall roundback design. Have you not noticed that the back of an Ovation looks like a pregnant woman. A famous luthier (who has asked to remain annonymous) saw the imprint in the sand on a beach from a pregnant woman laying on her stomach. As everyone knows the womb is one of the most perfect acoustic chambers. Hence, a design was born. The original pre-slothead experiments were actually liquid-filled, but that became impracticle for many reasons including they didn't project.

well, Miles, that theory would explain the escape hatch on the back of my smt..... like the clerk would believe that was where you made adjustments to the truss.... yeah, right!.... suddenly it all becomes clear.... and taking all the liquid out did make the guitar much lighter.... i must go and ponder this revelation further.....

(as the risk of committing blasphemy... God said let there be music... and there was Ovation ... and it was good...)

I use a product called "Fiddlebrite", that my nephew who REALLY pampers his guitars uses (kinda ruined my day when he had nothing but good things to say about Ovations when I emailed him I had gotten one...), it is a PITA to use, a LITTLE goes a long way, it is available at most guitar shops I believe, 2 OZ. bottle but that is enough to last a LONG time.

The cloth you use to clean/polish with is also very important - old cotton T-shirts or flannel work well. I have found that now even "100% cotton made in USA" towels are NOT 100% cotton, the test is to set fire to a corner and if it melts instead of burning it has fibers that WILL scratch in it - kind of hard to do that test in the store though...

You can't use roofing nails to polish! It needs to be 60 grit sand paper (small joke)
Actually the factory used to use the equlivent of industrial pledge, non-lemon variety. And just an old rag, mind you they were white cotton, clean and recycled or we'd use cheese cloth.
I have been known to take 0000 steel wool to the backs of very glossy necks. It makes them a little satiny and they play better, your hand slides better. In about a week of playing it's hardly visable.
The oiled necks I use the wax that comes in Warwick basses which I guess is very close to tounge oil.
Now what I use to clean my guitar that I play every day is a 50/50 mix of windex and chrome polish. The old Nationals love that. I use extra towels that I borrow from the golf course.
Hope this helps Bradley.

Nor this one above either! My God Mr. O have you no decency for a fetus in utero or it's #1 Caregiver? Believe me, I've seen more pregnant bellies than you have ever dreamed of (human of course), and I can honestly say that I've seen as many of those as you've seen roundback guitars! Doesn't even matter if you are #1 Mr Ovation! I've still seen more maternal bellies (up close and professionally mind you) than you've seen. The roundback guitar back (deep or shallow bowl or anything inbetween) does NOT look anything like a maternal belly at all. What are you smoking in that pipe of yours? Whatever it is, it isn't legal! You should have laid off of the "pane" or the "barrels" in your youth, cause it's showing now. Big time!

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll pass on the roofing nails idea and go for either the Dunlop 65 or I'll just drop in to a near by music store to see what they have.

Thanks again

Go for the Dunlop. Jim is a great guy and besides he could always use some more jingle.
