Well, here are the pics of the two adamas protypes of the adamas prototype nylon string and a 12 string woodtop protype with the same unusuall soundhole design.I guess the idea was scrapped and never used.It was interesting if nothing else. The two guitars are from 1981 .The third pic is the 1968 Glen Campbell model, early deep shiny bowl with five point bridge..Not many of these around!!

Isn't that damn interesting that the rings around the sound holes are all small Ovation rosette rings.

Is the whole area below the rings open (with just the rosettes to separate the wholes, or are there individual holes in the wood?

Hey Sam,
I tweaked up the Nylon phone a little bit to reduce the amount of shadow. If you have a better pic go ahead and send it to me and I'll just update the one that's there.

Paul, Paul II and Miles ,the soundholes are drilled just like they would be on a Adamas or Elite but the rosettes cover them slighty different.I think that design would have worked ona clasical model. The nylon string and the 12 string sound amazing..Im not sure why but i know the rosettes have nothing to do with it..Miles,thanks for posting the pics for me,better pics of the nylon are on the way, check your e-mail..I'll also throw in a few other unusuall ovations and if you feel like putting a URL to them i can post those as well...

As promised ,here is a better pic of the nylon adamas prototype and a few others...The one picture is a group of some of my semihollows..tornado's,12 string hurricane,Thunderheads(including Jerry Reed model thunderhead)and a typhoon bass....Then a pic of a few of the deacons and breadwinners(including gloss black breadwinner),then a rare prototype applause viper with some pick ups i dont recognize.Body is foam like bluebird and UKII..(Bill??)They never went into production..
Then my favorite deacon ,a pic of Jim Rickards deacon.Jim was one of the designers of the breadwinner/deacon and this was his personal guitar. It has a custom made walnut pickguard. For some reason he used a dot unbound neck on it..Its a great guitar and a great piece of ovation history...Miles thanks for your great work on sizing these and sending them to me.Wheres the Adamas thunderbolt pic?

Same the picture is not very clear, but if you can get a closer up of the pickups and send it I will take a closer look. They look a little like the Breadwinner pickups without the cover on them.

Sam, I'd forgotten about the applesause Viper. That is a foam neck (aluminum fingerboard) and body isn't it?

Sam, yes I remember that T-Bolt. Loved the chrome "rosettes" or hole liners. Looks like that pic was taken at the factory in the engineering conference room, the left side by the sliding door.

As far as the applesause pickups I haven't a clue. give me a hint, it might come back.....

Yes, that picture was taken while i was visiting the factory a couple of summers ago..It was a very cool guitar with the graphite top and adamas binding...The pick ups look like some type of demarzio humbuckers or something like that..Definately not ovation pickups.....

Sam, that GC Artist Balladeer: does it have the inlaid rosette? If so, when did these change to the "ring" rosette? Also, since this was a full depth bowl, was there any distinction from the Deluxe Balladeer other than the truss rod cover?

Wayne, the GC with shiny deep bowl, five point bridge and inlaid rosette only appeared for a short time in 1968..Very few made it out of the factory before Glen asked them to change to the artist size bowl(late 1968-1969) to help take the stress off his back during concerts......The difference between the GC and Deluxe balladeer would have been bracing (VT8 vs. VT11),fingerboard inlays(9inlays vs. 15inlays) and tuners(Deluxe chrome vs. gold) on GC model...Remember that the GC was closer to the legend model than the balladeer model...The early shiny bowl GC models also had a larger trus cover than the later GC models and the word deluxe was inlayed on the headstock...Now ,the really hard to find GC are the shiny bowl ,12 string models with his signature inlayed on the headstock and not on the trus cover..They are almost impossible to find..This is one that still has not found its way into the ovation musium.....

Here is a link to a gorgeous on that was on Ebay a couple of months back . . . sorry I missed out on it! An odd serial # of A-581-A which would have made it pre-production.

I saw that guitar when it went around. I thought about it, but I'm too poor to have a collection (beyond what I play), and, this may be sacraligious, but I have never cared for the first Ovation 12's. Not nearly enough bass response unplugged for my taste.

Wayne, i just looked at the e-bay ad for that 12 string GC...That was a rare one there. Not only was it a shiny bowl with Glens signatute on the headstock instead of tru rod but it also had the early 12 string design. The smaller soundhole with the large rosette..I have never seen one like that..What a rare guitar..How did i not see that one...DAMN IT!!!

Sam, what do you make of the odd serial #: Axxx-A

I was interested too but someone had walked into the store and bought it so the auction ended early.

Wayne, A plus thre digits is a normal serail number.Thats what mine is A- XXX ,the A at the end i do not recognize..The guitar is very rare though...The early shiny bowl with the small soundhole and large rosette is rare...I had never seen a GC like that.i have only seen the shiny bowl with standard soundhole and inlayed rosette..

There is a refernce to a "T" that stands for
"AAA ("Triple A" denotes extremely minor imperfection, but FULL WARRANTY) but I think the "A" may signify this also. CWK2, do you have any rememberance of this?

Mr. O, that's not the case here. Don't know what the second A stands for. Must be just one of those unexplained things, like UFOs and Elvis sightings. Elvis never played an Ovation by the way. This must be a 1968 to have the shiney bowl and the silkscreened signature. His show started in 69, didn't it? The spackled bowls started sometime in 68 I think, or maybe it was 69. In any case this guitar is right on that time line.
