I like to dabble with folk music, and different instruments at times. I have a beautiful hand crafted native american flute (friend made it out of sumac and birch bark) which is fun to unwind with after a long day. I have also enjoyed playing the dulcimer from time to time when I've had the opportunity. I would like to eventually find a good used one. Anyone out there have any leads on a 5 string dulcimer?

Hi, Norseman1. Glad to hear there are dulcimer players in your neck of the woods. As to your looking for one, I happen to be considering putting one of my 4-strings on eBay for less than 1/3 what I paid for it, but I don't think this site is appropriate for details since it is focused on Ovation products. However, you may feel free to e-mail me about the one I am selling. Also, my husband makes electric solid body dulcimers and could build you a 5-string.

I have a McNally strumstick which is a 3-string Dulcimer played upright like a guitar. Great fun, inexpensive & a doddle to play, sounds great with a pickup.

Paul;

WOW! StrumSticks are still around!?!?! That's great!

This McNally guy (I think his name MIGHT have been Bruce) used to have a store a couple of towns away from me in Boonton, NJ (20+ years ago).

He USED to have a six string guitar version that was an absolute DEAD RINGER for the Martin Backpacker guitar. I've often wondered if he sold the design to Martin (or if they stole it) since I don't see it in his catalog.

Speaking of which, I'm going on vacation "Out West" at the end of the month and don't want to sacrifice one of my precious guitars to the Airline Gods, so I'm considering picking up one of the Martin "carry-on" Backpackers. Does anyone out there have one (or have played one) that can offer any opinion?

I see brand new McNally 3- and 4-string backpackers on eBay frequently. A search just now for "backpacker" in the music category brought me 44 hits, most of which were instruments -- both steel and nylon string versions, by Martin, McNally and others. There were even some mandolins.

I've got a buddy with a Martin backpacker, while I have an Applause version. The sound on mine is much better. What's funny tho' is that when I play mine, I can't hear the sound. You've got to be in front of it to hear it.

"martin backpacker yuck"
- Don't "sugar coat" it Al, tell us how you really feel!!

I know, I know, I'm not particularly fond of the prospect either, but I'm just looking for something inexpensive that I can carry onto a plane.

I had heard mention of the Applause version on an earlier post. Checked out the website, and hey, guess what??...the Applause website (like the Adamas website) is "coming soon". (c'mon guys, getyer shit t'gether!!)

Does anyone here have one (or know of one) for sale?

Found this auction on eBay -- is this one too big, or is it what you are referring to? It's a 3/4. There are quite a few Ovation/Celebrity/Applause 3/4's on eBay right now, most of them brand new and under $200.

AA10-4
The Voyager has been discontinued from the manufacture.
They are releasing a new model called the Montana Travel Guitar
for $99.00.

Well, there was a picture there when I copied it, but all that pasted into this posting was the text -- but you get the idea (and you can go to the link shown above where I got the picture).

Cliff, apparantly McNally designed the Backpacker for Martin, very similar construction. Elderly sell a strumstick knock-off called a "Sweetstick" for about $70. I had one before I got the McNally. Crude, but a cheap way to get into the Dulcimer vibe.

Al, Martin backpacker Vs a regular guitar, yuck. Backpacker Vs. any other comparable instrument, and there's not many, pretty good. The Backpacker Mandos & Ukes are wonderful for the money.

Check out the Ashbory Bass, tiny, weird, sounds like a double bass, fits in your pocket, just about.
