Location: Orlando, Florida | Are talking about the 2000 edition with the arched top? Is it US made or Korean? I know that I am totally confused with the Ovation Collector's Editions. Some are mid-depth and some are shallow. Some are American made and some are Korean. I'm not only talking about the 2000 models, but also the 2001 & 2002 models as well. Can anyone help sort this out? |

Location: SoCal | In the beginning (1982) there was the Ovation Collector's series and God saw it and it was good (funny looking guy in the pictures tho'). This was strictly a U.S. built Ovation of high quality and interesting ideas.
In the past couple of years there have been two different Collector's guitars. Ovation and Celebrity. The former is made in the U.S. and is made in Korea and is the top of the overseas guitars.
My personal (and snobbish) preference is always for the U.S. guitars.

Moodypi, a semi anonymous member of the Ovation Fan Club, was declared unconstitutional this morning after mentioning the United States and Ovation guitars in the same sentence. Apparently, the joint reference gives the appearance of a tacit endorsement of the United States by Ovation Guitars. There was also a reference to God in the same communique, but God doesn't appear to be bothered by the implication the He endorses Ovation Guitars.

To me a collector's series guitar denotes a guitar of special significance in some way. Ok some of the board member will argue it is only a fancy wood top. well great so be it.
Making an import collector's series. in my opinion. only cheapens the significance and the status of the USA model and further stands to blur the line between the imports and the USA models.
If you are going to take what should be your important model of the year and make separate entries for both the import and USA line then you will have to be responsible for the harm it may do to the reputation of the USA line.
I guess I said too much here but I really take issue with this. |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | I'm not that avid on an acoustic player, so I have a little different take on the "import" collectors, but I pretty much agree with Al and the others. The ONLY Korean made "collectors" that would be valid in my book would be something that celebrated (no pun intended) the Koren made imports. Something significant like XX years of imports, or Korea is xx years old.. something significant. For that matter, I think the USA collectors should be significant. Not just a collectors for the sake of selling a guitar, but geeez... be a little creative... When I was in radio we used to have "the blue book" which had little enecdotes that you could turn to at any time if you needed to kill 30-90 seconds of airtime. How about.. Connecticut is XX years old and make a Collectors for that. The factory is XX years old. Bill Kaman is xx years old (well maybe there isn't enough wood for that :D ) But just because it's "that collectors time of year" is just silly in my opinion and cheapens the whole "collectors" project. I always like to end on a real note... so.. how about a collectors Viper in 2004 (or maybe it's 2005) to celebrate the 30 years after the original Viper was introduced. Hey, at least it's a reason. |

I'm with you 100%, if that happened, I (as Paul suggests) might be able to convince my wife to let me buy another guitar, but it would have to be a guitar that meets these goals.

The collector series was started as a place to try new ideas. The SS bowl, the parlor size, The SS 12 string, different woods, 16 fret necks, reintroduce the mid size, thinline pickups, etc.
Eventually you run out of significant things to do and I wanted to stop the series, at least for a few years and then REintroduce it.
An imported collectors???? 4, count 'em, 4 fingers down the throat!
Lets look at the reasons why;
1, For the money
2. For the sales
3. For the profits
4. To advance the state of the art of guitar building
Can any of you find the wrong answer in the above list? A free banjo lesson to the winner.
(Not that there's anything wrong with money, but earn it, don't sell out everything to do it!) |
