Location: Orlando, Florida | Here's one I'd like some input on. It seems that the clear coat finish on Ovations are prone to cracking. I have a 1997 Balladeer 1111 that's developing two cracks in the finish on either side of the bridge. They started out rather small, but seem to be getting longer. I keep my guitars in a stable environment (temperature, humidity, etc.) so I don't think that's the problem. Could it be the mix of the plastic bowl with the wooden top? Does the finish crack as often on the Adamas? Is there anyway to prevent this from happening? Any suggestions?

Location: east coast | I was looking at a 1988 collector ovation and part of the reason I did not buy it was the crack on each side of the bridge, very fine and almost hard to detect (could not tell if just a finish crack or through the wood), the salesman assured me an ovation rep looked at it and would get no worse. I decided to pass. |

Location: Scotland | If the cracks were in the finish & purely cosmetic it wouldn't worry me if the price was right. If they were structural I would have the guitar evaluated by a luthier.
The good thing about a guitar with a crack or two is that they can be very cheap. The other good thing is that a properly repaired crack will not usually be detrimental to the sound. Some 15 or so years ago I bought a 70's Legend with the typical treble-side, bridge to lower bout crack. I paid about £100 with a case. I had it repaired & it's been fine ever since.

Location: NJ | I have seen many guitars including ovations with finish cracks.
Ovations finish cracks seem to happen on either side of the bridge or down the center.
The cracks are attributed to the finish being too thick the difference between the bowl and the top adjusting to temperature.
I have seen the way the braces and bridges are attached at the factory and often wonder if the vacuum has anything to do with it.
well usually when they crack that is it and the crack does not grow sometimes it does it is not easy to tell. It does not effect the tone of the guitar in any way. |
