Location: Mays Landing, NJ | I just purchased one of these from my local dealer. I can't find any info on it anywhere. The 6 digit serial # indicates that it was made in 1998. It has a very nice spruce top with "Adamas style" marquette holes. The headstock is also covered with the same natural spruce that the sound board is made of. It has gold hwr and wood teardrop inlays on the fretboard.
Can anybody help me with info on this guitar? |

Location: 6 String Ranch | There were two versions, one legend and one elite. Engleman tops and spruce venieral on the peghead. Maple sideways inlays on the ebony fingerboard. Nice guitars. Maybe about 50 of each made (I'm guessing) Your time guess is about right too. |

Location: SoCal | I've seen those. I'm guessing that the Engleman spruce will age wonderfully. In about 10 years you'll have one of the prettiest guitars you can imagine.
These come up on ebay every so often. I've got to stop watching ebay so much. |

Location: Mays Landing, NJ | Tanks guys. Didn't mean to "Dis" anybody. I'm new to this forum since I just purchased this guitar. Haven't been around long enough to know who the people are that are "in-the-know".
CWK2, I was told by someone else that this particular model was made for the German distibutor (hence the name). Is this true, or is the "German" part of the name refering to the Engleman top? |

Location: 6 String Ranch | Meyer Music is the distributor. There were some that had minor (as in REAL minor) finish imperfections and they stayed in the states. Mostly they were glue bleed through around the binding. They showed up because the Eingleman started out so white. Also the spruce on the peghead was very unforgiving |

Thanks for all the help. You've been a great source of info.
Looks like mine is one of the ones that stayed in the US. On closer inspection, there is a sticker on the inside that says "Factory Reconditioned Guitar". I looked around the binding as you suggested and sure enough there is a little glue bleed through at the very bottom of the bowl. Looks like little strands of the spuce overlap the binding. Like you said though, unless you are really looking for it, its very hard to see.
Other than that, the guitar appears to be in mint condition. Not one ding or scratch. If I didn't know better, I would have assumed it was right out of the factory.
I'm not sure what the FRG status does to the value. I paid $550 for it. The spruce on the top is beautiful. The grain is very tight and perfectly quarter sawn. Still seems like a pretty good deal to me considering the condition?? |

Location: 6 String Ranch | FRG is a fancy way to say second. Take the lable out if it bothers you. As you said, the blem is very minor and in several years who will notice it(or even care about it?) It's a very unique and special guitar. |

Location: Scotland | "Factory Reconditioned" sounds pretty good to me. There are several levels of guitars.... icons, irreplaceable collectors pieces, historically important instruments, "vintage" but just about f***ked pieces of crap, utility guitars, new crap, old crap, new "relic" crap, reissues, factory seconds, players-grade instruments etc. etc. etc.... If the guitar feels good, sounds good & puts a smile on your face then who cares?

Location: Las Cruces, NM | I agree with Paul here. Unless you are totally a collector or dealer, evaluate the guitar by your own standards. When you can buy an American made guitar, like an Ovation, with excellent workmanship and materials for less than $600 today, buy it to play if you like it. Don't worry about the value, almost every well made, name brand (which Ovation is) guitar will maintain its value. Think, if you play it for 20 years, which a guitar of this quality will easily last if taken care of, and you sell it for $400, you haven't lost $200, you have played a quality guitar for $10 a year! Chances are you wouldn't sell it anyway, that's why some vintage guitars are scarce. Half the pleasure of a good guitar is looking at the general workmanship as the guitar ages and improves as it survives years of playing, minor imperfections will fade into insignificance as you see these little dents and scratches-each one a memory.
