Location: Back in the Valley of the Sun Mesa Az. | Just came back from playing an older 12 string Ovation at the Pawn shop. Sunburst, pearl machine heads, deep bowl (acoustic only)very nice action, a little thin on sound (not a lot of bass). Has a crack in the finish, and the color is a little faded in areas, but a nice guitar! Sure is easier to play than my Yahmaha 12 string.

Location: 6 String Ranch | That one will have a much better sound. Gotta love that deep bowl. Somewhere I heard they rule. |

Location: Scotland | Somehow I much prefer the look of the older 12-fret slot-head 12-strings to the later 14-fret solid headstock version. |

Location: SoCal | Paul, I agree. I like the look of the 12 string slotheads. I just never liked the sound. There's got to be some bass in there and I've never played one acoustically (plugged in it's a different animal) that did anything for me. |

Location: Scotland | Paul, I've played loads of the years, I owned a GC 12-string for a while. I never encountered a serious lack of bass, though some were better than others in that department. If anything the older deep-bowl 12-fretters should have better bass response than the later versions given the bridge placement caused by the 12-fret neck. I find a lot of 12-string owners set their guitars up with unnecessarily light strings, which can reduce bass response.

I tend to think that with Ovation 12 strings, the deciding factor is the bracing pattern. The A bracing used on later 12's, to my ear, just opens up the full guitar. Maybe it's that the only slot head 12's I've played have been in music stores and have had dead strings. I don't know. |

Location: Scotland | I've also found a lot of 12-string owners still tend to tune down a tone, even on Ovations, which are designed for concert pitch. That, coupled with light strings & the relatively heavy build of a 12-string will seriously compromise bass-response.
