Joined: August 2002 Posts: 8 Location: belfast northern ireland | Please help me out folks, I've been to the reference section to check out my model no' but it's not listed! The model in question is 1737. It has no hyphen and the last two digits don't appear in the list. Do the model no's for Matrix guitars have a different system? This has also made me doubt my dating of the instrument by its serial no'. It is a six digit no' the first three being 002 which I think dates it to 1972. I would Appreciate some verification on these matters by the more experienced ovation players out there. Thanks.. The third digit 3 also seems to refer to certain Elites. The Matrix was available between 1975 to 83ish, so that puts your serial number out. If it has an aluminium neck it's definately a Matrix/medallion or an early Ultra. The other way to identify a Matrix is the raised binding & plastic headstock facing. The second digit (7) does not relate to the Matrix and does not appear on any model until the mid 80's, when the "7" seems to mean deep bowl, Go figure. As has been mentioned here in the past, the reasonably logical 4 digit system fell apart in the early 80's. 1737 has me beat, maybe someone else can shed some light. I would guess that the first 7 would indicate a preamp, fet 3 or op24, before that it was a 6 for the vol, vol & tone. The OP24 and Fet3 came in around 83-84 as I recall. All I could guess about the model is a Balladeer special which had a foam neck and a rosewood fingerboard. Maybe Sam could comment here, I don't remember these model numbers that well. | ||

Joined: August 2002 Posts: 8 Location: belfast northern ireland | Thanks guys for your replys. I wish I knew how to post a pic on the site but unfortunately I'm a bit of a newcomer to this sort of thing. I could however send a pic by normal E- mail if any of you would like to see this instrument. It does indeed have the raised binding and plastic faced headstock that Paul mentioned, but this 1737 model no' is most perplexing! Let me know how you feel re' the pics. Cheers, Davey.
