Lets say you're having a party. You want to get 3 or 4 friends (who don't know each other well) to bring their guitars and play a few songs. Do you get together beforehand to practice a few core songs, or just let them show up on the night and let it flow?

Organizing musicians is like herding cats. Just show up and see what happens.
You throwing a party? Problem is Cork is too far a bike ride for me.

Great food helps too. For the best food, invite g8r's wife... or TR's, or Zilla's, or Beggin's...

Man, I'm getting hungry!

I can't even get them to show up the night of the party. You have 4 friends who play guitar?

Have each attendee bring 10 cheat sheets/tabs of songs they know. Then play the most common ones first. If that works out well, then cover the rest during subsequent jams.

These are posted at the Wild-Eyed Southern Boys group on the ning site, courtesy of Captain_Lovehandles. They've been invaluable for SSJI & II, Zillafest, and g8rbowl. If you can't find something common to play in these...

The original Southern Style Jam songbook
The g8rbowl songbook
Dan Fogelberg songs
Otto\'s songbook (this one is immense)

For group play/sing-a-longs, I always found that spontaneity was better. More important than formality, song sheets, and practice are guests who love to sing, know the words, are not timid, and are lead by one or two standouts willing to do so. One or two good guitar players can carry the beginner players, although beginners can be intimidated if they don't know the chords and rely on sheets. Keyboardists good at adlibbing tend to dominate and overpower pure acoustics, so have an amp at the ready if this is bothersome. Some of the most memorable sing-a-longs in which I've been involved happened at after-performance cast parties by musical theater groups. The sing-a-long was the means, not the end. This probably made a difference.

Hey Sycamore, are you familiar with Gavin Moore? Nephew of Christy Moore and Luka Bloom. He's a Cork boy. Sorry this is OT, I'm not trying to hijack the thread.

There you go Syc. You got 2 serious answers. Not a bad return for this bunch.

The key is just to do it. 3 or 4 guys who don't know each other well get together to relax and play guitars. Next thing you know, fun and friendship happens.
