The network connect remains at 54Mps with an excellent signal but internet drops out after about 10 minutes only to return 5-10 minutes later for another brief spell. Anyone?

BUT before you do, is your wireless router password protected? if not check to see if your modem and router is still in action (lights blinking when your connection is not working) you could have a neighbor getting free internet and slowing you down. lol, don't always think the worst, but it never hurts to check.

Noah, it is a Linksys WRT54G. Yes, it is a new problem and started after a full reformat and rebuild of my desktop and upgrade of my anti virus to Norton 360 V2 (from V1). The laptop is running Norton 360 V1 because I can't get V2 to load. Also, when the internet is working on the laptop it is slow and works somewhat better with FireFox than IE 6.0. I am using the Norton firewall. I tried the MS Win XP firewall without any difference. Both machines are using Win XP, with SP3 on the desktop and SP2 on the laptop. I don't know if the anti virus software is causing the issue or not. I tend to think not, but I really don't know. CP, the router is now password protected. It had not been up to that point. I have re-configured the router to drop the security with no change in behavior. It is now back to a secured setting. I've been down the reset and reboot path countless times without any difference. (I see that you are just up the road in Crossville. We should try to get together sometime) As an aside, the desktop is running great w/o any issues and is connected to the router with a ethernet cable. When I connect the laptop with an ethernet cable, it works a lot better, but still drop the internet connection occasionally. It is also slow. Hope this give you a starting point. Thanks for the quick response. Brad

Laptop, router, wired, TEST IT. Move on from there.. email me your number and I can chat with you on the phone. Every test and check is going to have a tree of possibilities.. much easier to deal with on the phone. But with any network issue, you have to figure out what works, and search outward from there.

Unplugging the router and plugging it back in used to work. After a neice and nephew came over and couldn't get it to work (nephew is supposedly in the computer business) my wife bought a new Linksys router. I installed it and got the same message, so I pushed in the cables on the back of the computer. It has worked since, so I'm guessing there was nothing wrong with the router. SWMBO's great for the economy. If the car won't start, you buy a new car instead of a new battery. Why repair when you can replace?

I haven't made the time find the right utility to handle the file. I'm afraid of downloading some utility that contains malware and making the problems even worse. Blues

There has been a lot of discussion on the net about Comcast dropping the signal with regularity. This is really pissing people off as it has been suggested that Comcast is doing it intentionally.

The download section at Linksys.com will tell you the latest firmware available. To upgrade your firmware, save the correct download to your hard drive. The Upgrade Firmware option in your WRT54G's Admin Menu drives the upgrade process. It will ask you where you saved the .bin file to. We found that regardless of current firmware, high-throughput and large file downloads caused the Linksys router to lock-up, disconnect from the net, reset itself. We now use a different router/DHCP server. The first thing I do is look at the cable modem's log to see if the modem or provider is the culprit. Work with Miles, he'll get you going.

I work for a Networking Gear Manufacturer... so take what I put here with a grain of salt :D Check the AP to see what level of encryption you are running - WEP, WPA etc-... then look at the re-Key timeout -time in which PC must re-negotiate a new Encryption key-... if it is relatively short -< 10 mins you need to change it to more like 3 hours... Also IF you are running WEP, I have seen PCs -newer ones- take 4 mins just to connect as they prefer a negotiated Key ... If this was all greek... e-mail me and I'll try to help
