Hello all, brand spaking new here as of 2 minutes ago, and I'm hoping someone here can help me identify one of my guitars...

It's and Ovation (obviously) solidbody, mohogany, neck-through, with a flame maple top, two humbuckers, 22 frets and either ebony or rosewood fretboard (looks more like ebony). It's shaped like an Ibanez Artist, and if you've ever seen Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, it's just like that guitar, only with a sunburst finish. The serial number is hand-written on masking tape, with the first three numbers scratched out, and some initials, which I think are from the original owner.

Sound familiar to anyone?

Thanks!!

Definately sounds like a GP...Joshe Homme has three of these ultra hard body GP's..One black(his first one),a red finish and a sunburst finish(bought that one from me)..I still have never heard a song by these guys.....

Thanks for the responses guys!!! It's deffinitely it, and I found a picture of it:

Same exact guitar.

At Guitar.com , it said this guitar is rare. How rare is it? Is there a spec sheet somewhere?

I was given the guitar from a friend who stopped playing. I had always drooled over it... and all of a sudden my birthday rolled around, and, well, it was mine. He had only paid $400 for it, too.

It's worthless... uh send it to me. Actually it is a quite desireable guitar. Unfortunatly current "street price" is probably between $500-$600 in reality, you may be able to get more. I think they are worth a lot more. I think this was one of the best production solidbodies made by Ovation. Actually I believe someone else made the bodies. Sam do you have an actual spec sheet on these? I don't..

Miles, if I remember correctly they were Samick bodies, Korean necks, Schaller tuners, assembled in South Carolina.

Come on guys, fess up and tell the guy what he's got. How much have the last 2-3 gone for?

The last few I have seen other than one on eBay were in the 500-600 range. I think that one went for over 1K on eBay.. but that happens only rarely. On the other hand, I wouldn't sell mine for $1500, but that's just because I don't want to sell it.

Gentlemen

That all might change, this is the guitar on the cover of "Guitar Player" magazine as noted in another post. Was this just coincidence or did any of you know that was coming? I missed the connection here till I was going over the postings. Now if somebody out there is playing a Viper would they please get on next month's cover.

I volunteer to be on the cover of Guitar Player magazine with my Viper "Deluxe" except the name of the magazine isn't "Might Be A, If He Got Off His Lazy Ass And Practiced More And Then Played Stuff That People Actually Enjoyed Hearing, Guitar Player" magazine. Maybe someday....

cwk2 - How far down the road? I didn't know any of us hillbillies could make one of them new fangled geetars.

Geek, small point but it's not a neck through.

*ahem* correction: I just took a VERY close look at it, and it appears that it IS set. It was done so well, however, that I had to REALLY look for the seams.

It's a set in neck like Gibson type construction. Just has a blended heel like the BC Richs of the period. They were nice venerials that were used for the tops although they are only about 1/32" thick, the rest is all some sort of mahogony.
