Looks almost Identical to the GTX-21. Hey Scoobydubytwo, is this the Japan model you were asking about a couple months back?

Apart from the pickup configuration, trem & body outline, this looks very similar to the Gbase pic which pissed you off so much. In fact the necks appear identical. Which would suggest that the Gbase pic is of a cheaper model of the series, so unless this is the Jap version Miles is referring to, they're family.

Hi Ninja,
I looked closer and it really looks like a gtx21 crossed with a Jackson neck. The celebs (although I thought a fine guitar for the price) really didn't go anyplace. These are the post UltraGS guitars. It has a Floyd style bridge so I have a couple of questions.

1. Does the bridge say Floyd Lisenced or is it just a clone?

2. What are the pickups, there seem to be a brand on the pickups.

3. Is there a brand or any other markings on the tuners?

4. What is written on the neck-plate.

That should help a lot.

thanks

Just an additional note. A friend of mine has one of these in red that he bought in the 80's for under $200 new.

i recently wrote to ovation and they said it was 350 rrp (us) in 1987-1988 they said the value of it could be in a higher range because it was a short run of a model. it has a kmd bridge, 2 XK-120 humbuckers, the tuners are ping and the name plate says :celebrity by ovation
a kaman music product and the serial number is 541522 my guitar is a dark cherry red and when its polished almost burgundy.....it palys better than a genuine strat from wat a music shop owner says so i think its a great guitar(i hope)

Light Buddha,

My only experience with the solid Celebrity was about ten months ago in a pawn shop. I thought the neck and action were good, pickups fairly warm. Overall good value for the cash.

I don't know about the genetics, but if I had to guess I would say Samick body (can't go wrong with that guess, they brand a lot), Korea for neck and assembly. Wish I could remember what was printed on the pick-ups.

I think of guitars the same way I do about cigars and wines -- a good one is one that you like. End of story. Play and enjoy.

An additional comment about the less expensive Ovation Solid Bodies... is that they are damn good guitars compared to others in thier price range. They were designed well enough, that if they are taken care of.. they will last. Maybe not a great "investment" for a retirment, but I find them all great to play.

i couldn't agree more miles. i think ovation solidbody guitars represent perhaps the best value in used guitars. some are extraordinary bargains as long as you are not telling yourself you just cot a les paul custom for $300-$400. i do think as ovation solid bodies become more well known they will perhaps appreciate in value faster than a sought after name brand vintage guitar. ie if you buy a clean breadwinner or ukII or deacon for example, i would think, with the growth of this site as a guideline, the ovations will appreciate faster than the "G's" or the "F's". for the price of a used les paul custom, you can have a variety very good ovation solid bodies.

You are so right! Every time I see those Ovation solid bodies on ebay for less than $500, I say the world doesn't know what they are missing, but each time somebody gets a quality guitar for a damn good price. Sometimes I'm tempted to switch my 401k to guitars, but the time is not ripe. I'm playing my Austin City Limits video of a tribute to Townes Van Zandt as I type, with Guy Clark, Emmy Lou, Willy Nelson, Peter Rowan, Jack Clements, Rodney Crowell, with shots of T Van Zandt mixed in. It makes me nostalgic. I say all you guys realize what chances you have, and take advantage before they go away.

I had a recent conversation with an investor friend of mine who is also a guitarist. He took a pretty good hit in the stock market a year or so ago, but the value of his older guitars has held. In fact, most of the Ovations have at least "held" their value which is more than you can say about many stocks. In fact other than the Fenders and Gibsons of the world, Ovation guitars (solid and acoustic) are one of the few that (there are others) that at least "hold" their value. I would obviously like to see them go up in value, but right now I'm not complaining.
One more thought on "guitars as an investment." For a musician, even if a guitar just "holds" its value, it can make you money. My Medallion that I bought as a 2nd for $150.00 in 1975 made close to $500 over several weekends in the fall of 1976 and spring of 1977 in Boston Common. Since then I have used it at gigs on and off, but during those two semesters, it was the only guitar I owned, sitting in the park Friday evening and much of Saturday with the case open in front of me, was how I paid for a Saturday nite party and gas to get back to college in CT. What's neat is that I can probably still sell the guitar for $150.00. That's a good investment!

investing in yourself is always the best investment. if what you buy appreciates, that is a double win. i recently found out how stupid it was to deny myself an adamas, and thanks to bill, i now have two. had i left the money in the "market" it would have been worth an epiphone today. and the pleasure i get playing them is priceless. i have the pleasure of the equivalent of opening a fine chateau lafite rothschild each time i open the case, AND it's still there when i'm done. and the response i get from my musician amigos always brings a smile to my face. and except for a special friend all of my guitars are for my grandson anyway. he also started with a roundback thanks to bill and is now teaching his dad after only a few months. that is the stuff money is for anyway. give me some tacos and a good guitar and let the bigshots eat filet mignon while they think about what they didn't do.

Ninja, Was that the neck you were refering to as being burgandy? Does it look like lotsa layers of 1/16" maple dyed burgandy? If so that might be one of those lost wax Nippon models.
