In fact the necks appear identical. Which would suggest that the Gbase pic is of a cheaper model of the series, so unless this is the Jap version Miles is referring to, they're family. The celebs (although I thought a fine guitar for the price) really didn't go anyplace. These are the post UltraGS guitars. It has a Floyd style bridge so I have a couple of questions. 1. Does the bridge say Floyd Lisenced or is it just a clone? 2. What are the pickups, there seem to be a brand on the pickups. 3. Is there a brand or any other markings on the tuners? 4. What is written on the neck-plate. That should help a lot. thanks Just an additional note. A friend of mine has one of these in red that he bought in the 80's for under $200 new. I thought the neck and action were good, pickups fairly warm. Overall good value for the cash. I don't know about the genetics, but if I had to guess I would say Samick body (can't go wrong with that guess, they brand a lot), Korea for neck and assembly. Wish I could remember what was printed on the pick-ups. I think of guitars the same way I do about cigars and wines -- a good one is one that you like. End of story. Play and enjoy. SK

They were designed well enough, that if they are taken care of.. they will last. Maybe not a great "investment" for a retirment, but I find them all great to play.

Every time I see those Ovation solid bodies on ebay for less than $500, I say the world doesn't know what they are missing, but each time somebody gets a quality guitar for a damn good price. Sometimes I'm tempted to switch my 401k to guitars, but the time is not ripe. I'm playing my Austin City Limits video of a tribute to Townes Van Zandt as I type, with Guy Clark, Emmy Lou, Willy Nelson, Peter Rowan, Jack Clements, Rodney Crowell, with shots of T Van Zandt mixed in. It makes me nostalgic. I say all you guys realize what chances you have, and take advantage before they go away. Joined: December 2001 Posts: 7247 Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | I had a recent conversation with an investor friend of mine who is also a guitarist. He took a pretty good hit in the stock market a year or so ago, but the value of his older guitars has held. In fact, most of the Ovations have at least "held" their value which is more than you can say about many stocks. In fact other than the Fenders and Gibsons of the world, Ovation guitars (solid and acoustic) are one of the few that (there are others) that at least "hold" their value. I would obviously like to see them go up in value, but right now I'm not complaining. One more thought on "guitars as an investment." For a musician, even if a guitar just "holds" its value, it can make you money. My Medallion that I bought as a 2nd for $150.00 in 1975 made close to $500 over several weekends in the fall of 1976 and spring of 1977 in Boston Common. Since then I have used it at gigs on and off, but during those two semesters, it was the only guitar I owned, sitting in the park Friday evening and much of Saturday with the case open in front of me, was how I paid for a Saturday nite party and gas to get back to college in CT. What's neat is that I can probably still sell the guitar for $150.00. That's a good investment!
