with that said....
what are you guys/gals personal preference and why
viper 2 vs. viper 3 vs. preacher vs. preacher deluxe vs. deacon/breadwinner vs. storm series (any semihollow body).

personally i go for the viper 2, i love it, the feel the sonics and the looks. also i love playing my friends thunderhead, its so smooth and mean sounding, but i go for the viper...they are oober bad ass

Late run Viper with the one piece Honduras mahogany body, mahogany neck, ebony board, and chrome schaller bridge. 10000 wind hot bridge pickup and nicely toned neck pickup. I would like one with an ash body and maple neck and board, too ... but never found one yet. Let me know of anyone knows of one.

The Deacon 12 is an awfully cool and versatile guitar, but the Viper is the go to guitar.

You can hear the Viper on my ning page. http://ovationfanclub.ning.com/profile/bobbo. It is the featured guitar on the song Carmelo, the lead on Hey Baby, the electric guitar on Fool's end, the electic guitar on Nowhere Man, and the electic on All Right, and the rhythym guitar on 9232H Shuffle. I've got about 10 electrics and the Viper seems to be the one that ends up on all the recordings.

Keep in mind that you may receive a lot of differing opinions to this question based on the extent of our exposure to and experience with these models. The most valuable feedback will come from those who have significant experience with numerous versions of several of these model types, over time, under similar playing conditions. That said, my preference for Ovation's solids would be:
1. VXT (really, an entirely different class)
2. UKII
3. Viper III
4. Others (Preacher, BW Ltd)

I have both a T-Head and Hurricane in the Storm series, but neither would be my preference over any of my other hollow/semi-hollow bodied archtops. Of course, this is totally IMHO.

Hands down the Viper is my anytime go-to.

As you poke around, you will find that I have/had them all. ( http://www.baronaudio.com/collection )

Viper III is fine in the studio, but too many switches for routine live work or as a "go-to"

While the humbucker pickups sound fine on the Preacher Deluxe and Deacon, I don't like the Preacher with those pickups not pre-amp'd.

I like the large single coil pickups of the early Breadwinner.

UKII is a great work horse, although I like the Viper scale better. I guess I could always do something about that, just haven't.

I really like the 3-pickup w/Kahler UltraGS guitars. Just all around fun.

The VXT is in a class by itself also, don't own one, but hope to.

UltraGP was nice... Better than more LP copies of the day, and has some "it" factor. Not worth $2000 today for me, but if I found another on the cheap, I would jump on it if I could.

Storm Series, my favorite is the Eclipse actually. I just like it. Also any of the few blonde Thunderhead and Tornado's

Magnum Basses are great, I like the PF-22's a little more.

PF-22 guitar... again, a workhorse, just like the Viper more all around... but like the PF-22's as well.

Y'know... A Viper III with a standard 5-position switch would be pretty cool. If you couldn't find enough with that.. then adding an extra "neck" switch a-la Water's Strat would work. Even on a pull-up knob instead of another mini-switch.

But seriusly, I think I would like the Viper III a lot more with a 5-way switch. Hmmmmmm

Good suggestion, Miles. Not sure there's any other way to achieve the characteristic bell tones of a Strat on a Viper III other than via the 2 and 4 positions on a 5-way switch.

That will do nicely. I'll PM you the delivery address. Needs a five-way switch, though.

preacherson, try a UKII.

I can't speak to the new VXT, but my opinion is the UKII is a far superior guitar when compared to anything else Ovation put out in their solidbody days.
