Just came back from an EXCELLENT week-long vacation of beautiful sun and surf on Long Beach Island, NJ (yes,...there actually ARE some VERY nice beaches here in Jersey!!).
While there, I wandered into "Ric's Aloha Classics" in Beach Haven. Ric sells some REALLY nice custom surfboards, an excellent selection of Hawaiian shirts, a wide range of surfing/Hawaiian art/jewelry/CD's,....and......UKELELES!!!
He showed me some of his collection (which runs the gamut of some 1920's "classics" to some of the modern, all-plastic "Fluke" ukes) along with his "fave" - a really nice, Elite-looking Ovation A/E uke.
I'd always wanted one for "dickin' around with" on the beach, so when he showed me a brand new Applause uke that he had there, I "hadda have it"!
Nothing extravagant, just a nice sounding, basic little "plinka-plinka", which is all I really wanted to learn on (plus it's an Ovation roundback to boot!!).
Anybody have any possible sources where I might be able to find a gig bag, instructional books/sheet music?

Glen Campbell played a uke on one of his Good Time Hour shows with Don Ho and as usual made it sound really great. As a mandolin player I consider the uke a rythym relative, they were a very popular instrument in the 50's and can be impressive in the right hands. My family had one and I recall us setting around doing the Hawaiin songs of those days. Aurthur Godfrey was the player and proponent of them in the 50's and his TV show probably sold a million, he had a talent show that introduced most of the musicians of that time. He foundered on the belief of irreplacement, proving the dicho of "stick your finger in a bucket of water and look for the hole that's left when it's gone."

The uke can sound really interesting in the right hands. There's a tune on Tone Poems #3 that is just Grisman on uke, excellent!! However most efforts fall welllllllll short of that. Did this uke you saw have a Koa top? We looked at this for the Hawaiian market but marketing concluded that it couldn't sell an expensive uke so it went to korea for the cheeep one. |

Location: NJ | The Applause one that I bought from him has satin finish light color top (almost looks like pine). The one that Ric had had a spruce top, eppaulets, Op amp electronics. Nice little unit.
You're right though, Bill.
A koa top would be cest magnifique! |

Location: NJ | Well, since I already HAVE a big moustache and beard, a fake one woulda' REALLY made me stand out in a crowd (even in Mehico)!!
Although it MIGHT not be as nice Puerto Vagina, in the past ten years so the Jersey Shore has done a complete 180 and has become a VERY desireable place to sun/surf (at least it's become very "unworthy" to all of the bad hype that it used to (deservedly) get and unfortunately still does). The ocean and beaches are pristine, sea life abounds, in the past several years I've noticed the gradual return of the pelicans, and last week I was treated every morning to several pods of dolphins cavorting in the surf while I drank my morning cuppa.
I'll make it down by you soon Russelisimo, I promise.
And if by chance by then the boat's finished, can I have the honor of lettering the transom for you? |

Location: puerto vallarta, mexico | i am glad to hear the jersey coast is on the mend cliff. in the mid 80's i bought a "unit" of cherrystone clams (240) for my sisters birthday. i ate about 3 dozen raw (damn, they are great like that with horseradish cocktail sauce) and thought i was going to die. the sack they came in said product of new jersey. that was the last raw shellfish i ate that i didn't personally harvest myself. and warm water clams and oysters don't begin to compare with the good stuff from the northern east coast. by the way PV isn't anything to brag about re pollution. in fact mexico is still a third world country and really needs to tune up before it's too late.
the sloop is at least 2 years from being finished, and in the mean time i am using a little cat ketch i built in '95. it is called poco a poco but i'm thinking ovation might be a good name for the sloop. what do you think?
by the way the club is in full swing. seems there wasn't too much to grieve about after all and machuca's family quickly got into dividing up the stash. so anyway, it's open mic night and who knows what will happen, as usual. it's usually a 4 set night for me, backing up the bandless (AND QUITE OFTEN TALENTLESS). the owner came back with a couple of new songs inspired by the south pacific. one is about the grass skirts and coconut shell tops the women wear. so on tuesday, one very tipsey gal wouldn't let us pack up until we sang the coconut song as an encore. i said on one condition, if all the women would get up and shake their coconuts on the dance floor. well the did and tried very hard to make us lose our place.................viva mexico!

Sounds like a good beginning for a tradition, open-shirt night, I, and many of our compadres here, I think, would attend much quicker than open-mike. Glad to hear the hiatus did not last long, Knowing Mejico I didn't think it would. I just watched Life and Times of Billy Ray Cyrus, who was playing a left handed Ovation maybe two, an elite and a custom, by the way, so this idea will not be original. You should promote your coconut song by designing a topless dance to go with it like they did with Achey Breaky, maybe call it Shakey Shakey and sweep the country, selling millions of CD's and bringing pleasure to millions.

I have an acoustic duo gig that night and I was thinking of doing a Mexican set in honor of the "Day of the Dead".

all souls day is nov 2 and is called dia de los muertos here. not many gringos know much about it but it is really a big deal here. everything possible to eat is in the shape of a skull or a skeleton. the mexican view of death is very different and their reverence for their dead family members is strong.
yesterday was the novena for "don" machuca. lots of ritualistic catholic stuff followed by yet more tamales and COLD pacifico. it was 91 and 95% humidity. there were only 3 other gringos there and the family thanked us profusely for coming. i got a little chili in my eye and that added greatly to the families take on my sorrow. machucas eldest son, now the 'padrino' was the last to arrive and stood stone like with 3 cell phones hanging from his belt. the street was blocked at each end with a dozen expressionless guys in sunglasses and gold chains keeping an eye on the flanks. almost like a movie.
we cut a live cd at philos on friday and my new band, "mid rock crisis" got 6 decent cuts toward our own first cd. i still play with philo's "shuffle band" and for the tues night and thursday open mic nights but my amigo steve and i like blusey rock and want to provide an option. not much blues in this area and a little 12 bar rock, was a winner during last year's open mic nights so wish us luck.
friday live recording is the new venue this year. instead of a band in particular it will be kinda like open mic night except the night goes on the harddrive and on monday (maybe sooner as it comes together) tourists can have un recado of their night at philos. we were mixing and mastering during sunday football. there should always be enough for a cd from the 4-5 hours of music. a pretty cool concept imho. this recording stuff is all new to me and i really like it.
anybody coming down this way, make sure that you leave at least thursday and friday night open and i'll get you plugged in.
