Sometimes the misinformed have no clue as to the value of certain things, guitars are no exception. Perhaps this friend of yours fits this bill. Refer him to this website and do a search on ebay for Balladeers. I would offer to replace the Balladeer Special with a model# 1111 Balladeer or a 1112 Custom Balladeer if another 1139 is not available. The Special was at least $100.00 cheaper when new in 1981 than the 1111 and $125.00 cheaper than the 1112. Balladeers of these models typically sell on Ebay for $250 to $350 and sometimes cheaper. I guarantee he can't produce any documentation stating the value at $1500.00 to $2000.00. You can get a "REAL" collectable Adamas for that kind of money. Good Luck Jim

Maybe you can email him and he can help you out for a lot less money, and your friend can keep his prized guitar. Good luck!

The guitar he lent you is definitely NOT worth $1500-2000!! It's a relatively cheap & not desirable Ovation & worth around $150. Orion blue book should have some kind of market value. Could someone take a look?? Your story is sort of like the following: You crashed your friend's 1981 BMW 320 & your friend says it's worth more than 2002 BMW 330Ci, though the 320i is probably around $1500-2000 now.

This person is just a little older than me, so we bought our guitars at roughly the same time. At that time, as much as now, unless you are "in the know" there is plenty of information and people to make you think you have an expensive monetarily valuable guitar. My Medallion cost $150 and was a 2nd. As I knew nothing about 2nd's.. I figured it was probably a $500 or so dollar guitar (it looked like a Balladeer) that couldn't be sold "officially" so I got it for $150.00. I bought it at the only "Factory Outlet" for Ovation at the time. Most anyone who saw it was "WOW... You have an Ovation!!!" When I started getting more into the Internet, I figured I had a gem. "A genuine made in the USA Ovation bought in '75, must be worth at least a $1000 by now." So harsh reality set in. Also as a reenforcement before reality set in... there there IS a difference between an Adamas and a Medallion. There are guitars today that are in the 400+ dollar range (other brands) that would not have lasted as long and as well as my Medallion. I'm sure most of the other $150 guitars back then have long fallen apart unless they were baby'd for the last 20 years. To the unknowning, an Ovation is an Ovation and the only real difference is the colors and woods. If you do a flat search on Ovation guitars, you find prices from $150 - $3000, and unless you do the extra research... there is no difference. What's worse, is that if you do a "little" research, you may end up thinking all Ovations contain no wood and are made in Korea. I hope the guy just was mis-informed and not trying to take advantage of a kid.

My good instruments are safely in their case in one piece after many years of playing. Anybody who is 49 years old and thinks his $150 guitar is worth $2000 and lends it to a 19 year old has about three levels of detached reality. I want to hear from any of our members who actually have $2000 guitars how often they lend them out. If you can't sell your junk, get someone to damage it and claim vintage value for what you knew was common junk. How many of you veteran Ovation owners would fall for that ploy? I think Jose should help his friend repair or replace his junk to some extent, but I suspect the guitar may have already had the damage that caused the break and the owner was looking for a sucker to blame it on. Looks like a good case for P.I. Moody to solve. Bailey

Unfortunately it seems that only my parents were teaching those values. I have found recently the lending things to people either cheap or expensive the lack of care they take for it is amazing. It got to the point with my brother in law that when he asks to borrow a tool I just give it to him and buy a new one since it will come back destroyed anyway. The point is that Jose was negligient and damaged the guitar. He is doing the right thing and trying to find a replacement. Holding him up is wrong but teaching him a lesson is correct.

But there's no reason he sould have to pay 2k to replace a guitar that may be worth $200. But hey I'm no lawyer maybe there is some 'pain and suffering' that needs to be addressed....

Joined: October 2002 Posts: 4 Location: Grand Forks, ND | In ALPEP's defense: I once managed to break my friends stereo. He said he paid 400 for it, but it was a few years old, and wouldn't have sold at a garage sale for more than 150. Bottom line, I payed him the 400 he paid for it, lost a friend and learned a lesson. Granted 2000 is a significant amount compared to 400, but there is still somthing to be said for respecting others property... I dont know if I made a coherent point here, in fact I think I managed confused myself... bottom line, I agree with ALPEP, I feel bad you jose, and I feel even worse for the jerk who is trying to screw you. Joined: February 2002 Posts: 613 Location: Zion, Illinois | Reminds me of the time my roommate broke my GC 12-string. He felt very guilty and wanted to make it right. I kept trying to tell him not to worry about it that it should be covered by the warrantee. The guitar had been in its case, sitting on its side. He bumped it and it fell on its back and the neck snapped at the nut. Well to make a long story short, while I was at work he tried to "make it right" and attempted to glue the neck back together! That's when I got mad because if he had just left it alone, Ovation would have fixed it for free! I guess the point of the story is, don't let your guilt cloud your judgement! If you can find an equal or even better guitar in the price range other have told you that guitar was worth, IMHO you've made up for your mistake. I wouldn't shell out $2000. BTY, a semi-happy end to my story. Ovation agreeed to split the cost of putting a new neck on my GC 12-string. Bradley [ November 16, 2002: Message edited by: Bradley ]
