I have a Deacon Ovation 12 String in mint condition that I rarely play. However, I recently took it out and put two new 9 volt batteries in it yet it gives a distortion sound on several settings. Isn't that supposed to be a sign that the batteries are low or does it take special batteries, etc.?

That is a sign of low batteries, so make sure they really are good, and although I am sure you were carful, that you didn't either pinch or break the battery leads when putting them in, The older wires were brittle, and eventhough the plastic covering over the contacts (where they attach to the batter) may be intact, it is worth checking the wires are actuually still intact.
