The guitar looks fine and sound wise seems good althought its my first Ovation so comparison is difficult. The guitar has been knocked in some way and repaired. The damage was to the edge of the body about 8 inches higher up from the strap lock (read bottom of the guitar). It looks like the white binding has broken apart , then come loose and was glued rather clumsily back into position. The binding is in place but quite a bit of glue here and there. The laquer is slightly cracked but only millimeters in length. Secondly, if the guitar is held near a lightsource and moved around a bit, in between the saddle and the strap lock... I can see the join of the wood. It is more noticeable at the body edge and becomes harder to see the nearer to the saddle I look. This could be completely harmless feature BUT could also be the beginnings of something worse. Otherwise its a fine looking guitar and its hard to believe its 19 years old and has an Ovation Hardcase too. The price for the guitar should I choose to keep it is £535 or $855. Lastly I wondered about if it would be wiser to wait and get a later model Ovation with the uprated electronics, EQ, tuner etc OR is there any particular advantage with an older guitar (better wood, better workmanship etc etc) that could then possibly have newer electronics fitted bringing the guitar up to modern standards. I will use the guitar mostly on stage...I work mainly as a vocalist / guitarist doing covers, Rock & Roll, blues, pop. finger picking stuff etc. To sum up.. I have a short time to either get this guitar or return it... I dont have much experience with Ovations therefore am trying to ensure I dont regret buying the first Ovation I have got my hands on. Thanks for reading this somewhat long post. Regards Alan

As for the crack you have to weigh what you are paying for the guitar compared to what another one would cost and it it would bother you or not. If glued the crack should be stable but no one knows for sure in these situations. This is a really difficult judgement call to make with no pictures or first hand knowledge.

Its just some general pointers I am after, so many times I have went ahead and done something then to be told the next day that "Oh you shouldnt have got "blah, blah ,blah... because of this that and the other" I am sure you know what I mean. Thanks for the reply Alan

I believe it's preference and needs. I'm saving to buy a new Ovation - Legend 1867. I'm ready to advance to a higher end model, I need a good acoustic I can plug in (as I've started playing with some friends in a band and lineing up gigs around town) I want the new electronics and want a guitar that feels good and one within my budget. I also want to support my locally owned Guitar repair shop/Ovation dealer (instead of some mega-music store outfit). My previous playing experience is sitting in the garage by myslf or at pickin' parties we have or around the campfire at KFF, now I need a profesional instrument! Some of the best advice I've read (I believe it was on the Hamer Fan Club Bulletin board awhile back) play the guitar and if the guitar feels and sounds right and suites your needs, then it's worth getting it. Just my thoughts on the subject...

I admit I am not as up on Acoustics so maybe someone else can advise, but it seems to me that for about the same price you could find the same guitar in better condition.
