a guy sailed into la cruz last week and participated in the open mic night at one of the clubs i play in. he really caught my attention when he uncased his guitar and i saw that unmistakable profile and headstock. it had several feet of abalone inlay and i couldn't wait for the guy to finish to get a closer look. as soon as the tail stopped swishing i was there like a fly checking out the new offering. i said 'cool guitar' (my best pickup line wasn't any better). he said 'it's an adamas, someone gave it to me for my birthday. i suddenly wanted to know this benefactor too. i had to look closer, as the black top was shiny enough to use as a signal mirror. i was shocked to find it was really a celebrity with limited edition inlayed at the 12th fret. even with the typical club lighting i could see a high degree of finish and detail. he visited my house a few days later and i showed him some of my guitars including 2 adamai. he asked me what i thought of him leaving his guitar on his boat here over the summer (imagine 150 humid degrees working on a nice guitar) while he was back in the states and i offered a stall in my guitar stable instead. he accepted, as he saw the logic of his axe spending the summer in the company of family.

i thought celebritys were in general a cut above an entry level ovation, but this one really changed that opinion. it looked, played and sounded in the 9's bracket. he knew nothing (obviously, thinking it was an adamas) and i'd like to know more. anyone know any details on price, origen, number made, etc? if that was a korean guitar, there is no lack of skill or technology in what i briefly saw. are the foriegn and american guitars starting to overlap to some extent?

to the unknowing any multi sound hole ovation is an Adamas.
They have been making collector edition celebrity guitars for the past few years. I really don't see the point and it is a pet peeve of mine. if it is a collector's series it should be your best and a limited edition, if it is made in Korea it is the secondary line and with a phone call another 1000 can be made in the wink of an eye.
aside from profit what is the point?

al, i think this one was called special edition and might reflect the best in the korean line. i do agree that the waters are pretty muddy when it comes to the mid range guitars in particular. all else aside this was a good looking good sounding guitar. of course like they say down here, por noche todos los gatos son pardos. at night all cats are dark. make sure you check something out in the daylight before committing-----mostly refering to the girls all get prettier at closing time. i'll get a better look in the daylight. how much do they sell for?

I am not saying they are not great guitars. I think the street price was around a grand. It just bothers me that the company is importing a guitar to compete with the usa collector's series.
but what do I know? I sell gear for a living and play the guitar...

Here is a story I read in a Music magazine a long time ago the place was in England. A guy was in the market for a new guitar so he went to local guitar store. The sales man pointed ot to him some of the guitars he liked and suggested what to stay away from. He said a couple of models sounded pretty bad they were new and not made locally. So he went on and picked up one of the guitars that he suggested to try out. A couple of minutes later he and the sales person saw a guy picking up one of the guitars that the sales person said was unplayable. The guy nodded his head and continued to go on and try it. Once he started it both the sales person and the guy stopped in amazement. He was a remarkable player the guy turned to the salesperson and said I thought those guitars were unplayable. He just shruged his shoulders. Once the guy stopped playing he bought the guitar and left. The guitarist who was playing the guitar was Jeff Beck. A well made guitar is important but second to what we bring to it. You can have the most expensive guitar out there at home, but if you can't play it well what's the difference. Unless you collect guitars to sell..

I was surprised to discover, after my second visit, that a "2001 Special Edition" I was eyeballing was a Celebrity. It was a decent enough guitar, good looking inlay, very impressive looking "Limited Edition" on the 12th fret, and had the multiple soundholes. I considered it as a possiblity of purchasing, but there was a Legend right next to it that feels better, looks great, and sounds great (I know, shallow body, but it's what I need) and is cheaper. I plan on putting it in lay-away this month (had to wait until after Christmas). I own a Celebrity I bought from a co-worker, at the time I didn't have a decent guitar to play. That was a few years ago and now I try to play every day. I'm ready to move up in guitar quality, part of that is having the money to spend on a higher-end model now, too. I just couldn't imagine buying a more expensive "Limited Edition" Celebrity for more than any of the USA made ones.
My Celebrity has served me well, as the Ovation web site states "...that will continue to earn its keep as your playing skills mature."

By the way I just looked at my Celebrity and it is a CC67 Model, not listed on the web site...

It's refreshing to hear some great shiite about Celeb's.....Thank you, gentlemen....very well written. Now, Al, don't think I don't appreciate your input or opinions....I very much look forward to them on any given topic. I, myself also choose USA made products for a variety of reasons. I just fell in love with the Viper when I saw it....and the price was right.....and it's soooo much sweeter than the $99 Dreadnaught I was going to get....and it's an OVATION....and if we nuke North Korea, it will probably be a discontinued model, because South Korea will be pissed at us as well....

So, I don't think I've ever seen a Viper in a store. It looks great in the images on web pages...

No nukes, please...

so how much is the special edition? that is what i was curious about as the one i saw was a gift and the guy didn't know. i would also go for an american made legend instead of the extra "pretties" the celebrity had. i have never owned a celebrity, and was curious as to why they dressed up an entry level guitar so much. kinda like putting gold trim and full power on a fiat. i hope a budget legend with an unfinished knotty pine top isn't part of this expand the model philosophy. picking a good ovation was simple in the days of my 72 balladeer. and my favorites are all at least 20 years old.

just re read alpeps post saying street price is around a grand. i think i would rather spend that much on a primo used usa model that has already stood the test of time.

imagine the guy who was going to leave the special edition on his boat here over the summer!!! i can just picture a pile of little abalone pieces in the case when he returned. nice gift but not a well thought out choice for a sailor and the related beach parties.

"...kinda like putting gold trim and full power on a fiat..."

LMFAO!! :D

Never owned a Celebrity either, but DID own a Fiat once when I was young (and stupid) so I get the analogy.

THANKS Russ, for the coffee levage of my sinus cavity (and keyboard!!).
