| Saw this on Ebay
web page
I was really interested in this 'O' but it really seems that the top is really uneven in it's coloration and placement. Just curious to know if any of you 2001 Collector owners out there think this is normal or inconsistant? |

I bought a 2001 collectors off e-bay a few weeks ago. There were some disparaging remarks made about the quality of these instruments and the tops in particular. Having embraced this instrument almost constantly for the last two months or so, I can tell you my experience has been quite the opposite. The quality and craftsmanship that went into this guitar is absolutely first rate, and it sings like Pavorotti. Having said that, if you're going to be unhappy with the grain of the redwood every time you look at it, maybe spruce would be a better choice. Personally I think the redwood is gorgeous. I've seen the one you are looking at and I've been taking Rolaids daily to keep from bidding! Damn GAS. :rolleyes: |

| Thanks ceres, yeah, ever since I bought an Elite T from Alpep I've had GAS. I'm looking at adding a couple more this year if all pans out well. I played a 2001 Collector's at a local shop that came in on trade and it sounded schweet. Only the price tag and multiple dings scare me away. |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | The 2001 Collectors is my favorite acoustic. Don't get me wrong, I like a good Adamas as much of the next guy, because it sounds like an Adamas. But to my ears, the unique rich sound of the 2001 Collectors, makes it my favorite acoustic guitar. |

| Yes, its redwood I’ve seen this error of calling this guitar rosewood on ebay several times. To my knowledge rosewood is not used in guitar tops. A couple of high dollar custom Mfg’s. now offer redwood as one of their optional tops. |

Location: Alabama | Yea Ricker, the Elite T is a fine instrument. I was unimpressed until I actually saw one and played it at a local dealer. Really big acoustic sound. After a couple days of GAS I went back to get it only to find it sold already. Probably for the best anyhow. :( |

Location: Scotland | Redwood is related to Cedar, Pine & Cypress, all of which are relatively common & very good tonewoods, though used mostly in classical & Flamenco guitars. David Russell Young and James Goodall have used Redwood for steel-string guitars. |

I haven't said hello for a while, so hello, redwood as a top wood IMHO is not very common, but that certainly doesn't mean it's not good. |

| If I had my pick of top woods and price was no object I would chose Sequoia, known in the guitar business as Millennium Redwood. Who could not like a guitar with a top that was over 2000 years old? Go to Leach Guitars then click on wood and then the Millennium Redwood guitar picture, or my favorite guitar maker besides Ovation of course, McCollum guitars.

Redwood & it's related species may not be common on production instruments, but that's probably because most of the potential customers think the only wood suitable for tops is spruce. Pine, Cedar & Cypress are very common for classical & Flamenco guitar production, especially in Europe. There are lots of small-shop luthiers worldwide using non-traditional tonewoods, and of the many alterntives redwood is a popular choice. Redwood tonally is similar to cedar, but is usually more visually striking, though it can vary greatly in stiffness & weight. |
