I have an Ovation 1612 Deluxe Balladeer (1983), which I love. It has the 1/4" jack with volume knob only. After seeing the electronics Kaman is now installing, I got very jealous, so I am considering upgrading mine to the OP-50. I think the XLR capability will be a plus (the OP-50 is the only one that does that, I think...) Does anyone know if I will need to replace the pickups as well (or anything else for that matter...)? Will I still have the 1/4" jack as well? Are there any pitfalls here?? Thanks!

I sent them an e-mail Friday, & I'll post back with their answers when I get the reply. I was also hoping to get some feedback from people who have done this sort of thing to their own guitars.

The original preamps work perfectly and don't sound a whole lot different to the current pre's with the controls set flat. If you want extra EQ, effects or feedback control leave the guitar as it is & buy some outboard processing, It'll be a lot cheaper than a factory upgrade.

A Behringer SHark is affordable and serves nicely for many tools including feedback elimination.

The Shark is a total problem solver for amplified acoustic guitar, I've had one in my stage rig since they were introduced. No eq, but you get a compressor, noise gate, high-pass filter & a superb multi-filter intelligent feedback destroyer for a lot less than $100. Also works as a mic pre-amp/phantom PSU. About the size of a couple of packs of cigarettes, the Shark is ridiculous value & a great sounding piece of kit. Take a look at the pic of my stage-rig in the members gallery to see one.

Thanks a bunch, guys. Paul, I see you've compiled quite the collection. Nicely done! Thanks for sharing, particularly the outboard gear. It gives me some great ideas. From the looks of the picture, you can set up faster than an omlette on a hot skillet! VERY cool. I see you're using a Boss AD5, several of my friends with acoustic guitars use that & swear by it.

The AD5 is indispensible. The EQ, digital reverb & chours are excellent, but the icing on the cake is the mike-modelling feature, which goes a long way to making any piezo or magnetic pickup sound more natural. A Shark & an AD5 is a great combination.
