'cuz at the time EVERYone was playing either an LP or a Strat, and THAT's what prospective "buyers" were looking for . . .

Damon, I saw on the other thread that you were trying to sing like Ozzy. I thought you sounded just like him when I first saw the video, but I didn't say anything because I didn't want to insult you. If you were sober when you did that, you are really talented.
Obviously, you were dead on when you said I wouldn't appreciate the music. I appreciate your skill though.

Too funny. My 17yo came home from church Tuesday, saw the stuff setup, then saw the video. His first comment was "How much wine did you drink tonight?" Then he thought I was a dork, then he thought it was cool and sent it to all his friends.

Stone cold sober I was. The cup behind me had OJ in it (no vodka even!)

Ozzie will be very disappointed.

Personally I thought it was a GREAT job!

Just to clarify that, Damon, I meant that Ozzie would be disappointed in it just being straight OJ, not in the rendition. I just happened to re-read my post and it didn't come off as I meant it - sorry 'bout that!

Mostly timing. Marketing, or a lack of it, had some play, but mostly timing. Ovation was ahead of its time in many ways, but they came out when the Les Paul and the Strat were king.

After Marketing and Timing, I think the pickups played a small part too in hindering a more broad acceptance. The few non-Ovations I bought in the day, as they were electrics, always had the caveat of "well, if I don't like the sound, I can always swap pickups". That wasn't a real easy option with Ovations. While those of us who took the plunge learned the potential of the Ovation electric sound (some like Damon mastered it) most would plug in, hear whatever it sounded like with the Vol and Tone at 10, and walk away thinking that was it.

They may not have gained a wide acceptance, but there sure are a lot of them out there.

One of them has my name on it. I just haven't found it.

to add to what cliff said about LPs and Strats, the pointy guitars were very big towards the end of the Ovation solidbody days. The other 2 guitars I was considering when I bought the UKII were a...

Enjoy it! I still believe that guitar had a lot to do with me immersing myself in learning how to play. I do have some bias for sure, but I've A/B-ed it with so many different guitars over the years, and never found anything I liked as well.

That said, my workhorse was the Flying V, but it didn't have near the tone or "umph" the UKII did. I had to do a bunch of tweaking on the amps and adding pedals and such to be happy with the V, but the chicks dug it, and that's what mattered in my world then. The UKII just seemed to get the tone I was looking for every time. Effects weren't needed.

I think Beal has answered that one over and over.
Right guitar, wrong decade.

And, my favourite, Common Sense Isn't Common.

Fortunately, we can still buy bits of the past so we can visit but don't have to live there.

I was never one of "the army", but that looks like a KISS guitar. Maybe if I had the makeup and platform sparkle boots.
