I'm sure a bunch of you saw this one on ebay. I was the high bidder at $59.00, and the guy stopped the auction with a minute to go. He was selling it for a friend, and the guy said "no way!" to $59.00. His price is $103. Odd number... I didn't question it. Looks like the neck was chopped and grafted. Cosmetically horrible, but looks like it's staying in one piece. My question is, for a hundred bucks, $125 with shipping, would it or would it not be worth it to have a second Ovation around??

Walk away from it. For about $250 you can have an Ovation beater that is in much much better shape.

Hey Scott,

You're just looking for a project ain't you? Did you notice that the upper part (peghead) didn't have the stripes of a five piece neck like the lower? Looks like they grafted a import peghead (nato mahogany?) to a USA made (mahogany & maple)neck! Although ugly it looks as though someone knew a little about grafting. From what I see of your skill as a luthier I beleive you could turn it into a real nice 2nd guitar. On the other hand if you took your $125 and put just a little more with it you could probably find a much nicer conditioned one!....But then you'll have to find another project, right? :D

I'd stay away from it. There are plenty of nice Ovations available that are a much better value for the money. Dave

Gosh, I saw an Adamas II go this week for $650.

Adamas II guitar for $650

There are better deals out there to be had, run away from this one!

Thanks for all the responses. I sense a concensus here. Being a part time repairman, I'm drawn to things like this. One of my favorite searches on ebay is "project", then narrowed down to the musical instrument category. These projects are seldom worth the time and money invested to "bring them back", but I like the challenge, I guess. In '87, when I had my guitar shop, I sold a US ('76-ish) Applause to a kid, and off he went to summer camp. I saw him a couple months later, and he offered me the Applause back for $5.00, because someody didn't LIKE him, and stomped on it until the neck broke right at the 7th fret. I contacted Ovation, some girl in the parts dept, and begged her to sell me an old Applause neck. Well, she finally went rooting around and found one that was identical to the original Applauses, but had a "normal" Ovation headstock, and actually said Ovation on it. What was that, a Matrix maybe? Anyway, the neck cost me $86 with shipping, I think. So I put the new neck on the old body, swapped tuners, put a new set of strings on it, and then sold it for $100. Made off with a coooool four buck profit! Let the good times roll! But the satisfying part is giving a second chance to something that would otherwise (at best) be turned into a flower pot. Back to the "Trashadeer", I'll probably pass on it; if it were at a flea market or garage sale, and I walked right up to it, I wouldn't be so good at restraint.

I won't try to give you any advice about what's woth fixing, but that story gets awfully close to you being the kind of guitar fixer and seller that has faded away. We have had so many stories on the board of the guy who helped the beginning player, but no longer exists. What can I say?

There's another one of us in the wilderness. I was bidding on the Trashadeer and was significantly MIFFED when the bidder suspended the bidding. At $100, it ain't worth it. At $59.00, it was real marginal. I did admire the resourcefulness of whoever did that grafting job, though. Keep looking, Scott. I'll see ya out there in the auctions!
