Location: California | Several Folklore Deluxe have been & are still on eBay for several months. No one is willing to pay $1499, however.
Best Ovation sound? It depends which Ovation you have ever played.
I don't think it can sound better than my 1619, 1537, 1681, 1687, 2001FR. |

Useless to debate what sounds better here, as personel preference has a lot to do with it. But until you have heard them side by side you may want to reserve judgement. I personally have a Folklore Deluxe (#34) as well as the 1681 and 1687 the same as you plus quite a few other nice models and I could offer my own opinion about how the Folklore deluxe stacks up to them. But it would just be my opinion.
I think the market for a wide neck, 12 fret guitar is somewhat limited. Coupled with the price in these hard financial times. This certainly doesn't lead to a high demand. But when it really comes to sound, the craftsmanship, the fit and finish I would go on record as saying that it would be hard to beat the Folklore Deluxe for less money. The inlay work on the soundhole and the tortoise shell binding are just incredible. And the sound ... you really need to hear it for yourself.

Location: Scotland | Give me a 12-fret slot-head guitar over anything, that design produces an amazing tone, completely different to a 14-fret neck guitar. The prototype Adamas 12-fret slot-head we saw at the factory was killer. I suspect that the lack of interest in the F-deluxe may kill any more 12-fret, deepbowl non-cut slot-heads as production guitars but I'd take one now if my own custom order wasn't in production, which unsurprisingly is a 12-fret, wide-neck, slot-head, deepbowl cutaway. |

I agree 100% with Paul T, The sound of my 1614 Folklore is awesome!! - compaired to my other steel stringed guitars (1112 Balladeer,1627 Glen Campbell,and even my '93 collector which sounds damn good) the Folklore has the clairity of each string when strummed/plucked where the others sometimes seems to run together! Dave can back-up what I said 'cause he also had a 1614 before he got his new Folklore!!!(he may still have it?) I'm sure it's been mentioned in other threads but I beleive it's because of the "tension" the slothead's angle puts on the nut combined with the placement of the bridge that produces that clear tone-whatever it is it sounds "sweet" to my ears!!(and that ain't 'cause the're BiG)

Location: Scotland | My first ever Ovation was a Folklore back in about '76, I sold it for a handbuilt replica of a Martin 12-fret 00045 (slot-head) great guitar, but so delicate I was scared to take it on stage and have regretted selling the Folklore ever since. |

| From a marketing standpoint I think it Ovation was targeting someone besides me. On my beget I cant spend 1500 when I can get one of the old ones, like I already have for about a third the price and know one has said the new one sounds three times as good as the old ones. If they had slapped that same wide neck slot head twelve fret on an Adamas SMT or CTV, moved the bridge back and tweaked the bracing, I’d probably have one now no matter what it sounded like. I could live with a ‘poor mans’ Adamas wide neck slot head.

Location: Phoenix AZ | Mike, I sold the 1614 as soon as I got the FD. But the 1614 is a damn nice sounding guitar. I also love the sound of the original Josh White (see gallery). There is just something about a 12 fret slothead deepbowl that is terriffic for all the reasons mentioned in this thread. I forget, was the new Adamas Slothead we saw at the factory a cutaway?
I had a private discussion with someone at the factory and asked why the FD didn't sell. He told me that the sales force was not interested in pushing anything that didn't have a shallow bowl and come in sparkle colors.

the Folklore with sealed tuners and the "new" style rounded corner bridge where the Josh White had open tuners and the 5 point bridge!

According to my vintage ('80's) Ovation catalog it states that your (sniff) '81 Pacemaker 12 string has Ovation fan bracing!! My '81 Folklore has Ovation X bracing!!

You are correct that the Folklore 1114 and 1614 was supposed to be the "renamed" Josh White. But I've had them side by side and the 1614 does not replicate the sound of the original JW. Maybe the bracing is different, I'm not sure. But I think the hand layed shiny bowl, the rosewood bridge, and the steeper headstock angle all contributed to the great sound of the JW. Plus I really like the looks of the inlaid rosette and the JW tuners. They are not just plain open gear tuners, they have a wonderful fine etched pattern on them. Very classy looking. I think if anything, the recent Folklore Deluxe is really the rebirth of the Josh White. The FD sounds more similar to the JW than did the 1614 - in my opinion. BTW, I took the black buttoned tuners off my FD and replaced them with pearloid/gold ones. Looks much nicer, I think. Dave |

I was tring to remember what I bought from you off of ebay (Sept 02,'00) I'm the guy (or Jerk) it's according how you look at it, who bought what I thought was a pearloid/GOLD set of tuners for my Folklore but when you sent them they were pearloid/CHROME!!! (My old computer's color was "slightly" off) But you gladly let me return them which I appreciated! - Remember??

Location: Phoenix AZ | Yes Mike, I now remember you. Hope you have a better monitor by now (does my folklore look pink?). I didn't swap the whole tuners from the FD to the 1614, just the buttons. The 1614 actually looked pretty cool with the black buttons and the pearliod ones definately look great on the FD. The tuners on the FD are not 3 on a plate ganged per side, like the 1614 and classicals. They are 6 individual enclosed tuners made by Schaller. I can't figure out what the model of them is. They are similar to the M6 tuners, but are made special for a slotted peghead with steel strings. Maybe someone on this board can help identify them. I'll email you a picture. They look very nice.
