Location: the BIG Metropolis of TR | Hello fellow Ovation lovers,
I'm having a GAS attack again, this time it's a 1866 Legend 12 string. Do any of youse guys have one or can tell me anything about how the shallow bowl 12 strings sound? Also any problems that you might know of? I beleive this one to be one of the earlier ones ('90?) with the battery accessed thru the soundhole and just a 3 band eq.
Any and all help or suggestions as always is appreciated!!

Location: Denver, Colorado | I've had mine for about 5 years now. I initially bought it just to perform with (Shallow bowls were built to be plugged in) but I actually record with it as well and it sounds good. I've never had a lick of trouble with it and the action is just like the day I brought it home from the store. It stays in tune and is just a joy to play. The black shows fingerprints easier but it sure looks good on stage. I just can't say anything bad about it other than a mid or deep bowl would be better if your going to be unplugged most of the time. |

I just recieved a email from the seller accepting my offer and closing the deal! Serial #425xxx makes it a '90 model (1st year for the 1866) and it in natural finish. I play mostly unplugged but I don't think I'll have any problem with the sound of the shallow bowl. I've played many 6 string shallow bowls unplugged and I like the "brightness" (not trying to start a deep vs shallow debate) they offer but plugged in I bet they do sound good.

Based on some of the other members post about getting new 12 strings lately it looks like 12 stringin' is the "happening" thing now-a-days (especially if you're selling one)

I stopped by my local friendly neighborhood music store today at lunch to see what they had hangin' around-This store is an authorized Ovation dealer and in the past they've had very few Ovations on display (maybe a balladeer & a couple of celebrities) but today (must have known I was coming :D ) they had 2 legends (1777 & 1867 in beautiful blue sparkle) 2 balladeers (1771 & 1861) and HUSH YOUR FUSS!!! a 1866 legend 12 string in all it's natural glory!!! I commenced to playin' and was blown away by the sound of that shallow bowl 12 string (maybe it was just because it was new!) sweet,bright,easy to hold (I don't have a large gut but it's bigger than the average bear's) just a great sounding and playing guitar!! If the 1866 I just bought sounds and plays anywhere close to this one I played today I just might start me a 1866 collection :eek: I got so wrapped up in playing and admiring the fit and finish that I was late getting back from lunch! (the boss figgered I'd stopped by the music store :rolleyes: ) Anyway thanks for reading my ramble and I'll keep you posted on the 1866 12 string adventures!!!!

Location: Phoenix AZ | Mike, You need more underwear. Actually since that photo was taken I've sold a few 12's and added a few. Gone is the Red Hurricane, 1615 Pacemaker and Glen Campbell. New is another early shiny bowl 12 string, a better Glen Campbell example and a Nutmeg Hurricane. I think the Hurricane is in the gallery. Dave |
