Joined: March 2002 Posts: 14842 Location: NJ | Being "gig-less" Sat. nite, I went down to my local watering hole to check out the entertainment. The guy playing simply went by the name "Edric". He's a young, tall, thin, black dude and was playing a black Tangent and was very, VERY good! I'd seen him before at a local OpenMic about a year or so ago playing a blue Celebrity, but I hadn't seen him around since. He plays a very funky, syncopated style of guitar. Very Dave Matthews/John Mayer-ish, but says he'd never really listened to them and had been playing like this for a lot of years. Quite impressive. He was backed up by a really, really GOOD funky bass player and a percussionist who played congas/bongos (who also whipped out a TRUMPET on a couple of passages!). While he wouldn't consider himself a "fan" of Ovation guitars, he does like using them for his live gigs (comfort, speed, non-feedback, etc.). For the type of stuff he writes/plays, the Tangent brought a very good sound to his playing. The sound was not by ANY means what a purist would call a live "acoustic" sound, and he was playing through a couple of effects pedals, but it definitely wasn't over-laden with it. Nice, though. As funny as it may sound, but the guitar sounded like it "looks" like it would sound. HighTech/Techno/Futuristic, but STILL retained it's acoustic backbone. While I would NOT go out and BUY one, I came away with a new respect for the ugly little "Tagament". Strumming12: If you're interested, he's playing this Sat. nite at that coffeehouse in Denville (CommonGrounds??). Doubt if I'll be able to make it. Rick & I are playing at a PigRoast (of all things!) Sat. afternoon, and then I may be LBI-bound.

I may check him out, though I hope to be camping-if the flooding of the earth comes to a hault for a weekend. If it doesn't, my ark should be finished and I'll paddle on over to Uncommon Grounds. I was actually there this past weekend to hang out. I play there a lot too. Hope you are well. Enjoy your piggy! Be well, Johnny

Last weekend I did a last minute solo gig at a local Mexican restaurant, and the whole first set I had a cooked severed pig's head staring me down from an adjacent table (quite unnerving.). The PigRoast this Sat. is a gig at place we play regularly. This past Saturday one of the guys that comes to see us once in a while wants us to play a private PigRoast in his back yard. Just added Pink Floyd's "Pigs On The Wing (I & II)" and Harrison's "Piggies" to the repertoire. Maybe I'll add James Taylor's "Mona" as well. Any other suggestions? (I guess "Hava Nagillah" is out of the question) :D
