In a recent thread regarding VXT guitars, MidiBuzz wrote:

"... Takes a bit of getting used to if you are coming at it from playing electric guitar, simply because it has an "ovation feel"; it has some acoustic guitar qualities to the neck... "

This piqued my curiosity. Could any of you that bat from both sides of the Electric/Acoustic plate expand on this. I have often wondered how much difference, from a playing perspective, there is between these. I certainly know that just about any electric player I hear does things I can only dream about on any of my O's. Other than lighter strings, what differences do you find?

Or is it like most things, differences within a brand/model vary as much as differences betweens brands/models.

One of the things I love most about my Viper is that the neck has the same feel as my acoustics.

there's all kinds of different Ovation neck profiles and widths, so I doubt there's an all encompassing answer for you.

I don't know what it is about Ovation acoustics, but hands down, they're the easiest acoustics to run up and down the neck on.

Maybe its the scale. That's about the only thing I can see that's consistently different than the rest.

The approach is different.
Electric is much more bar chords and partial chords because you've got the sustain. Or you're playing the real bright chunka-chunka rhythms, similar to how a mandolin acts like the snare drum in a bluegrass band.
Acoustic is more about struming and playing the chords or fingerpicking arpegios.
Both these are over simplified obviously but this is about how I see it.
And just cause you're good at one doesn't mean it's an automatic for the other.

I find acoustic and electric as 2 different beasts.
I approach playing each one very differently.

Yeah... I learned that the hard way.
I first bought an electric, but decided that I needed an acoustic to play what I wanted.
That search led me to a store with an over-priced Ultra...
Which led me to eBarf...
Which led me here...
And the rest is History.

But yes, Acoustics and Electrics are totally different animals for different purposes.

Naw... Portland Music Company on NE Broadway.
They wanted $500 for an old-style Ultra with no case. The 'no case' sealed it for me.

I've actually seen a coupla Adamii at Apple

Acoustics have larger dimensions and the feel is completely different. Electrics are tighter and your hands remain closer in to your body. This is another reason why I prefer the EA Vipers and SSBs. They feel more like electrics and are very comfortable for me in a standing position. Acoustics are lighter, however.

I find many of the tunes I play on acoustic start in the open positions. None of the electric tunes do.

I find that I play very different styles of music on electric vs acoustic, which translates into different techniques. One could mash out power chords on an acoustic Ovation plugged into a distortion box, or one could play delicate fingerstyle on an electric. But in reality the sound of the instruments dictate that they be used more for certain kinds of music and less on others.

I don't tend to think in terms of electric and acoustic being different animals, more that they are used for different types of music. So naturally they are played differently. I could lower the action and put ultra light strings on my O acoustic, and it would work fine for rock 'n roll.

FlySig, the VXT bridges this gap. There is no question that it has everything it needs to be pure electric, but dial up the piezo and you'll be surprised at the realistic acoustic tone in your arpegio fingerpicking.

Thanks for all the replies.

For those that came looking for something else...

You guys are so easy. Pavlov was dead on.

For the rest...

Thanks again. So I guess I could go out and get an electric guitar so I could suck in a very different style. But it ain't gonna make me talented.

Shoot, I was hoping for a silver bullet.
