Location: Indiana | Hey everybody - "a friend" from over at Peaveyt60.com who, like me, is also an Ovation owner suggested that this forum would get me some good information on the subject of DI boxes for recording. I had a song where I plugged my Ovation directly in to my 4-track.....which was because I could get "the snap" far better than by trying to mic off an amp. That worked, buuuuut......I also got some undesireable noise. My recording levels were good but something (preamps in the 4-track possibly) was just not reacting well. I had a hunch that might happen but didn't have the DI and the noise wasn't bad enough to stop the recording over. Even so, it's clear that a DI would probably improve the quality and also prevent a possible preamp blow-out (I've heard of it happening).
So if those of you who have been DI'ing for a while could let me know if you're using passive or active, and what brands/models it might be a big help in selecting a unit. There's a lot of them out there to pick from (I saw dBX in Guitar Center, and I trust that brand quite a bit just as one example) so clearly *experience* is valuable.

| I got one of those on temp's orders (sorry, recommendation) - it's currently in Virginia but if somebody forgets to pack it they can FORGET TO GET OFF THE PLANE. |

Location: Round Rock, TX | When I want just a direct box, I use the Whirlwind Direct. It's passive, nice and quiet, with ground lift and pad switches. It has been thoroughly reliable, live and in the studio, for right at 10 years now.
I have also thoroughly enjoyed the BBE Sonic Maximizer that I bought here on the forum. As a matter of fact, since I started using mine, at least two of my friends have bought their own. It will run off a 9V battery or wall wart. |

I like blending the sound....mics and DI with the emphasis on the live mic sound. |

I'm curious, are you using the plain bbe sonic maximizer, or the one that's the combo DI and maximizer?

Location: Utah | I've been seriously considering the Aphex Aurel Xciter, or the Aphex Punch Factory Optical Compressor for live performance DI. Both boxes offer some good sound improvements, plus can be used as a DI box. |

Location: Utah | Around here, DI stands for Deseret Industries. It is the Mormon equivalent of the Salvation Army store. Everybody gives stuff to DI, called "DI-ing" your old stuff, and a lot of people shop at DI, frequently referred to as "We're going DI-ing".
I never heard the term "DI" with respect to guitars until a few years ago. "Ya want me to DI that guitar?". Uh, what? Are you suggesting this guitar is junk? |
