I live in the NYC suburbs, and we lost power from 4:10pm until 9:30pm last night. Once it got dark outside, there was not much for my family to do to (no videos, no computer, no lights to read books, etc).

So, I got out my trusty O Legend and entertained the kids until bedtime.

Now that's what I call Great Family Fun.
Happend onetime to me many years ago during an NC Snow and Ice Storm. I was still living at home-Of Course just about everyone lost power-So Everyone Moved upstirs to Living Room-Lit up The Fireplace-got out the quilts and the blanket-And My Dad and I played Guitar and Sang Songs-From 7:00pm till around Midnight.
Stopping just long enough to roast hotdogs and marshmellos over the fire.
It was great family time!
Just the family--a fire--hotdgs-Marshmellos and a couple of Ovation Guitars!
Ahhh-Memories!!
Hope all are well in NYC.

Even in Europe the American blackout is headline news. Hope everyone gets by as good as you did.

Good luck to all of you stuck without electricity.

This is the third major NYC blackout that I've seen in my lifetime (thusfar). The 1965 one I was very young, but remember it. In 1977, it was the summer of "Son of Sam" and it was pretty violent and unnerving. This time, it's amazingly peaceful and cooperative. After September 11th, it will take a LOT more than this to test the tenacity and sense of community of New Yorkers.

A breed apart.

Hope all is well in the Northeast...

I get a kick out of reading that after each of those blackouts Cliff mentioned, there's a baby boomlet 9 months later... lol

So, who needs Viagra, eh?! Just turn out the lights long enough to get the job done!

The baby boom is actually caused by no TV, which makes people sit around and listen us us play our Ovations ... and we know how the ladies just throw their panties and the rest of their feminine assets at us when we play. At least that's what the wife always accuses me of.

From reading the above comments, it makes me wonder if I'm doing something wrong with my playiing.

OK

Confess everyone, with no media distractions, no TV, no stereo, no nothing except the beautiful sound of an acoustic guitar played by a picker that had never had this opportunity. There should have been great seductions as your significant other FINALLY hears that love song you have been rehearsing for 10 years, but couldn't overcome the TV. I visualize 100's of Ovationists singing and playing like Elvises that have been waiting to shine.

I must admit that this last black out was a real learning experience for me. Not only was it Thursday and Friday but we had another one on Sunday after a hell storm (the southerners pronounce that hail).

I've now learned how to start the generator and how not to start it. All the automatic systems don't work and I needed to carry the 60 Caddy's battery out of the car to jump the generator battery that is shot and needs to be replaced. So now it's a new battery and a new hook up and while we're at it upgrade this and that and, and, and. Not complaining but isn't that the way things go?

All said and done it was nice to spend an acoustic evening (unplugged) listening to the mountain top talk instead of the TV. I think we'll do it again, even if we don't have to.
