Greetings to all. This is my first post here; I'm new to the forum, but not to Ovation guitars. I've owned 2 Adamas I's, one Adamas II, a Custom legend and an old 70's classical ovation. Anyway, on to my question. Is it true Ovation will still make the old style, textured top 1687 style Adamas I've heard this before, but never confirmed it. In my opinion, these old Adamases blow away the new SMT and CVT models. Thanks for the help-

They'll make pretty much anything you want. We saw old style Adamas models in various stages of construction at the factory in March. The current production textured top Adamas, while doesn't look like the old models, sounds damn close.

One difference, if I understand it right, is that Ovation no longer will make a walnut fingerboard.

I think that goes for just about anything.

American Black Walnut is not an ideal fingerboard material. The original Adamas walnut fingerboards were impregnated with a resin, or went through some process which made the wood more suitable for the purpose. The guy who invented the process died a while ago I seem to remember. One of the Adamas brochures said something like "the fingerboard will not show any wear as a function of time" I've seen a whole lot of Adamas Walnut fingerboards, which if they had been ebony would be in better shape.

Thanks for the quick responses everyone... Any ideas on the cost or (more importantly) the time period from order to completion?

I've got Black walnut fingerboards on both my Elite (20 years old), and Big Blue (10 years old). The Elite has wear on it, no doubt. As cool as I think the walnut looks, the new Elites with bound ebony fingerboards look great.

Huddog, As I understand it "Special Orders" are suff like the Vipers, Country Artist, Longnecks, Mandocellos etc. which are listed in catalogs but need to be ordered. The website quotes 3 months on special orders. Custom Orders are non-production guitars, special finishes or electronics upgrades and they quote 6 months for those. My custom order which had a lot of non-standard features was turned around in less than 5 months including surface frieght to the UK. I'd guess that if you go to a dealer with a special or custom order you're not likely to get a huge discount off list, espeially if he has a bunch of production models on the wall he needs to sell.

Huddog,

I ordered (and recieved) an old style 1687 Adamas last year.

The only specific specification (apart from the colour) I asked for was the Optima preamp.

I was suprised when it arrived that it had an ebony fingerboard but it's a much better playing surface than walnut. Feels better, looks better and wears better.

In case you were wondering, the guitar sounds incredible.

Huddog,
Ovation did a custom 1858 Elite 12 String for me with a BowlChange and a finish change and turned it around for me about 9 days shy of 3 months.
it's all according to what you want.
for the record,They did an outstanding job on mine.
If They're building from scratch from the ground up- Paul T's estimate may be closer- you might as well plan on 5 to 6 months.
hope this helps.
If you need a dealer to help you on this Try Our very own Al P. He'll help you out and He's great to deal with if you have any questions.

Even cwk2 agrees that ebony is better choice for the fretboard. So it's a mistake to use walnut on Adamas 1?

Back then, the walnut was impregnated with resin.

Walnut is very nice looking, if you have one enjoy it. Most fretboards don't show wear until they have been played for some years. An impregnated walnut fretboard will probably last almost as long as an ebony one. The real problem is all the little fretboards that are the result of the impregnation, how do you bottle feed a newborn fretboard when the motherboard has no breasts?

I resent that, I've never worked in a gas station in my life.

Has anybody figured out how a fretboard gets impregnated, is it in the back seat of a Checker?
