I'm just being a sentimental bastard, but it has occurred to me SEVERAL times this week just how much I absolutely love my Ovation guitars. The thought really does enter my mind when I'm playing "Damn, I really love playing this guitar". The excitement that was there when I first got each one hasn't really worn off, and I think for any product, that's impressive. I'll pick up one that I haven't played in a while, and though it's strings might be a bit old, I find myself in awe of it's beauty and sound, and love these ease in which it plays.

I love to write songs, and oddly enough, 95% of the time I pick up one of my guitars, the first thing I play usually ends up being something new...a progression or riff that I've never played before. Who knows where the inspiration comes from, but I really think the SOUND and FEEL of the guitar plays a key element in how that happens. It amazes me because I feel more like an observer watching it happen, rather than someone making a conscious effort (usually I'm not thinking when I play-guitar is my sanctuary from conscious thinking). The result is always appreciation for the sound that happens.

I'm sure it sounds stupid, but in this group, I'm sure there's someone who understands the feeling well. It's just the bliss these guitars help create for me.

Ok, back to reality. Enjoy the weekend.

As I said in one of my earlier posts, my Vintage '73 Gibson Hummingbird sits unplayed in its case because I cannot play anything except my Balladeer 12 and 6's!.... That "wowiewhataguitar" feeling is a real experience and keeps the music fun. It's a feeling that faded with the Hummingbird (even though it still sounds beautiful).

muse on!

Doesn't sound stupid to me at all Johnny, I know exactly what you mean. Although I probably couldn't have written it down as well as you did.
I was trying to explain the "observer" thing to someone the other day. I was showing an on-again/off-again student of mine "Classical Gas" the other day & he asked me how I was doing what I was doing. I had to tell him that I really had no idea, I was sorta watching & listening, just like he was.
Also, speaking of loving your guitars, the music store got in the Elixers for my Elite 12 the other day. I went & got some yesterday. I was expecting 12's, but they turned out to be 10's. Steven had ordered "a box", but he got a "box of boxes". Must have been at least ten sets in there.
Anyway, I decided to try the 10's. Since they were special order & he wound up with a whole buttload of 'em I wasn't about to tell him I didn't want 'em. (I might have had a buttload of 'em, literally, it was a BIG box!) While I was at it I pulled a shim out from under the saddle. First time I've tried that & it was much easier than I expected.
No buzz anywhere & MAN does that sucker ever play nice now! It was good before, now it's incredible! It's not as loud unplugged, but I don't care, it still sounds great plugged in & those light Elixers set down low feel like buttered popcorn withough the slime. Wow!

P.S. Did you ever find that video tape with Classical Gas on it Mr. Moody?

Nils,

I don't know if it is the version you are looking for, but Glen Campbell plays a great rendition of "Classical Gas" on a tape entitled "Glen Campbell, Live in London". It was filmed with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1977, and it appears that Glen is playing a 1613-4 Classic. It is regularly available on eBay.

Thanks for the suggestion Bob, but I think I'll wait & see if Paul M. can investigate up the video tape's whereabouts first, that would be the perfect way to go, if possible.
No more Mr. Moody, I promise :)
Btw, I sure do like them there Elixirs, great set o' wires!

I just took a look on ebay Bob & there are 4 copies of that video for sale right now. While I'm still hoping to get a copy of the Smothers Brothers Show with Mason Williams playing it from Paul M. (it was a great show & I'd like to have it again, this time I'll break out the gizzit so it doesn't get recorded over).I think I might just buy the GC tape too since it has some good stuff on it too. Thanks again for the suggestion.

I just put a bid on one :)

Nils,

Go Ducks...in San Diego but my heart is in Oregon.

If the store is overwhelmed with strings, maybe he can come up with a good price for OFC - heck, shipping would have to be minimal.

Every time I read posts like this, I feel like this is the best web site on the planet, or off the planet maybe. These kinds of dialog is what the web is for.

Right on Bailey! This is just about the only forum I haunt with any regularity... It's cost me some money, but heck, look what I have to show for it.. Hehe...
Back to your point Johnny, I get the same peaceful feeling every time I pick up one of my "O"'s or my "A", I just don't have the talent part of it, but it sure is fun improving...
Not only do the instruments bring such a great feeling, but the good folks at Ovation make me "want" to support them in the way they treat their customers... Wonderful people that provide that good old fashion "service with a smile".

I just sold my 92 collector's series guitar. It really hurt to see that one go but it went to a person that was looking for one for a long time. I used that guitar for about a dozen gigs and each time everyone's jaw dropped at how beatiful the guitar is. ONce did a gig with a guy with a taylor who spent 10 minutes trying to make that thing not feed back while my Ovation was plugged in set and ready.

I am in a very strange position because I am a player, collector and retailer. Sometimes I let guitars go that I really love and I regret it. Sometimes it is purely economical, other times I get bored or overloaded with gear, and lastly there is a factor I could not explain. At one point I had probably 15 Adamas I guitars, at one point I had none and now I am back up to 3 not including a couple of prototypes. Funny how that goes but it is the nautre of buying selling collecting etc

It's the dilemma we all face that life and time is short, and you can only play one guitar at a time. The more you have, the more you face the decision that killed the burro that was equidistant between two bales of hay and starved to death trying to decide. More sometimes is not better.

I was set to make a fortune selling burros and panning equipment to weekend prospectors, but I inadvertantly placed my stock equidistant from the store entry, and spent 6 months hauling out customers who had starved to death before I finally had to fold the enterprise. The problem was revealed when a cross-eyed customer showed up and spun himself to death, and we discovered that a perfect balance can be fatal, but it was too late. Better to be on one side or 'tuther as some of the old prospectors say.

Live and Learn!
