What is the tuning on an instrument like that? I have never tried to play anything other than a 6/12 string.

Mandocello tuning is CGDA, an octave below tenor mandola. The Irish have a variation where the courses are tuned in octaves rather than unisons. The intervals are the same as mandolin, but you can forget playing most mandolin chords, the scale length is way too long. With a change of string guage a mandocello can also be tuned as an Irish Bouzouki- GDAD sometimes ADAD or Greek Bouzouki -CFAD (there's a number of variations in tuning for both Greek & Irish Bouzouki) Listen to the first El Rayo-X album for some great mandocello playing by David Lindley.
