Location: Huntington Beach, CA | I read all the related posts about this subject and then read the Ovation brochure that came with my guitar and ended up buying Trewax. I'm sure it is excellent protection but it darkened the neck and headstock (satin finish mahogany). The top is satin finish natural color and I'm reluctant to use the Trewax as it may also discolor the top. Ovation says this is routine maintenance per the brochure. Any thoughts?
I was surprised that the wax penetrated the urathane on the neck, but it obviously did. The top is supposedly hand rubbed satin finish urathane too.
Also, do I have to buy some specialized oil for the rosewood fretboard or just use lemon oil from the grocery store?
Excellent post on "the blues" by the way. |

Location: High, in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado | I have waxed all of my Ovations and it only darkened them just a tad. In my opinion, they needed it. Waxing never darkened the tops, but I do not have a guitar with the natural finish.
I look at it as "feeding" the wood, or finish. A hedge against dryness...
If it were me, I'd wax it, and let the natural finish shine, as it were...
I do hope you get other input on this, it would be interesting to see what others have to say about it...

Dunlop 65 on the top. I don't remember who all told me to try it but the Dunlop 65 is really great stuff.

Location: Huntington Beach, CA | I also like the Dunlop 65 product, but only on gloss/laquer finish instruments. I'm not sure about the satin/natural finish guitars. Not that a darkened top would be bad, just different. Also, it might be impossible to restore to the original shade. Any other opintions out there? |
