I was ebay surfing Sunday night and noticed a Preacher with one bid at $199. I bid $205 and had the high bid until someone sniped it at $293 right at the end.
No sour grapes, but I just wondered why Preachers seem to get less respect than other Ovations. Vipers were great deals, but values seem to be climbing. I vaguely recall a few comments by Beal that he didn't care much for Preachers, but I was wondering why people aren't too high on them.

For me, it was the pickups. They just didn't seem to have any punch. I changed them out soon after I got the guitar (30 years ago!).

They remind me of an SG and I didn't like them.
Also the pickups didn't have the kick CL mentioned but my problem is that I'm not a fan of that double cutaway shape. But there are a ton of people who don't share that POV.

I got rid of both of the Preachers I owned over the years. I thought they were too "polite".

$293 is a bargain if it was in good shape. My guess is that the Preacher isn't as unique as the Breadwinner/Deacon, so it is less desirable. I happen to really like my daughter's Preacher and would buy another, though I would prefer to get a Breadwinner just for the shape.

I bought mine from the original owner who claimed it was virtually unused. Looks it, too. I paid considerably more than the going rate, but it was worth it to me. The market is fickle, but we all know that.

My first guitar was a Preacher. Unfortunately for it, there was a UKII hanging next to it. It took me about 3 months to come up with the difference to trade up.

It looks like used guitar values are particularly low right now. Though the inventory is not very large, the selling prices on the Bay are pretty attractive. I don't want to queer anybody's bids so that is all I'll say other than I wish I had some spare cash right now.

I prefer the SG shape, but never really liked the Strat or Tele shape. As long as my electrics just sit there for me to look at, maybe I should get one that I like the looks of.

A mahogany Preacher was my first electric O, followed by a black Preacher Deluxe.

Gave me a severe case of GAS that seems to recur from time to time.

AJ

Good question Mark.

Instead of starting another thread, I'll just hijack this one, seeing my question is related to one of the responses.

One of the reasons given for Ovation solid bodied guitars never 'making it' was said to be the inability to swap the pickups for aftermarket jobbies. Why is this job so un-doable? Wouldn't you just have to make a new pickguard to suit the new pups?

You'd need to make a new pickup (or hack the original) and enlarge the rout under the pickguard, as opposed to swapping out something exactly the same size requiring no work other than soldering a couple of wires. It was unfortunate that Ovation solidbodies coincided with the late '70's peak of the aftermarket guitar parts fad. Anyone with a Strat, Tele or Les Paul could buy enough brass hardware from Dimarzio or Mighty Mite to make any guitar impossible to lift without incurring a spinal injury. Both companies sold horrible-sounding standard sized humbucker and single-coil pickups with enough output to jump-start a tractor, and at the time that's what everyone bought and installed in their guitars. Because of their propietary nature Ovation solids made the whole aftermarket customising process more difficult, so for a while it probably contributed a little to their lack of success.

Speaking of jump-starting, AJ's pics fired up my GAS for a Preacher. I really didn't mean to say that the GS shape was my favorite. I just liked Gibsons over Fender in terms of appearance. The ES335 or Les Paul would have been my favorites. I've had GAS for a Tornado for a long time and a GP would be nice, but not realistic.

If one guitar model gives a certain sound (smooth or agressive), and you don't like this sound, buy an other one that as the sound youre looking for!!!
Thats the reason I have many guitars !
The only modification I ever made on my guitars is changing the plastic bridge saddles for brass saddles on my breadwinner.
At that time 1982, parts where still available from Ovation ...

I suppose we should talk about the sound rather than the looks, by my electrics don't make much sound.
