I am buying a second Ovation (already have a Adamas W597 on the way). I love the 1778T and the S771, both have great tone and looks. They will sound exactly the same through an amp, right? Since I have a epaulet guitar, a round hole would be good for a difference in guitars, but the 1778T is one of the most awesome guitars I have ever played. I saw the Guitar World article today on the slothead, and decided I am going to become an Ovation "collecter". Start with 2 and get that slothead as soon as I can afford.
I have a strong sentimental draw towards O's, as my two early mentors were big fans and played some great O's (Adamas III, '84 Collectors, 90's Legend). The resounding "Martin's are overrated and overpriced" keeps bringing me back to Ovations. I like Martins, but have just sold my D1 to get this second Ovation. I love them, think they are really cool and "hi-tech" and love the sound. The slothead article resonated that same opinion and I am sold.
So, which one for a second Ovation? Round hole or 1778T, which is in a catagory of its own?

I'm going the opposite way. I have a balladeer (round, shallow bowl) and now I'm looking for an epaulet model (Mid-depth). As I've already stated in other posts, I can't find mid-size bowl models to test, but I have many stores left to visit. I went to a small store on Friday that is an Ovation/Adamas dealer.... Six-eight Korean made, no American made, and no Adamas models (although they did have brochures on Adamas models). How can you be an Official Adamas dealer and have no models?

Personally, I will disagree with you on Martins. I have a d15 and it was not overrated and not overpriced. At $599 with case, it's an all solid wood mahogany, American made great value (IMO). I've played many Martins in stores, and I feel Martin makes many excellent guitars at different price points.

English,
That was my mentor who was an Ovation fan who told me Martins were overrated and overpriced, and I disagree with him as well. I really like my D1, but want something else.
You said you were looking for a epaulet model. Does it have to the "traditional" epaulets? If not, I would recommend the 1778T sight unseen. I had one (had a preamp short, sent it back) that was awesome. I test drove one in a local shop and that one was awesome as well. It sounds heads and shoulders abovw the S778 Elite Special I had. TONS better. The best sound I have heard out of a non Adamas/Collector's (i.e. high end) Ovation. I have bought two Ovations and 6 total guitars from this shop ( www.guitartrader.com ) and highly recommend it. Call them and ask for Steve Parr. Tell him I (Matt McGriff) referred you to him and he might give a better deal than you'll see on the website (they are pretty good already). This is a "local" shop in San Diego that inspects and prepares guitars for shipment, yet beats the warehouse dealers prices. Try em out.
Speaking of local dealers who don't have any inventory, the local dealer in my town said he doesn't sell any and got rid of all of his inventory about a year ago. Right now he only has one of those 3/4 size Applause guitars. Awful. The next closest Ovation dealer is a horrible place to shop as a guitar enthusiast. They carry Martin, Taylor, Ovation, and Taks (4 brands I really like). They mark them all at list and the guy pulls out his little calculator and gives you 10% off list. I want in fishing the other day, looing at 310's, a tak ean15c, and some O's. I told him my budget was $1500. He showed me his "real nice" used 2000 Collector's Tak, that he could part with for $1500. Yea, right. Oh, and the 2001 NOS Collector's Ovation with the treble side epaulet peeling off. I played that guitar a year ago in that shop. He could part with it for $1500. They always try to talk you into financing a guitar everytime you jst want to browse.
Anyway, to play any O's, Taks, Taylors, or Martins without feeling like I'm at a used car lot, I have to drive 2 hours to a Guitar Center. Pitiful.
Check out a 1778T. It really is a great guitar. That's why I am so torn. I really want that guitar, but want some diversity. Who knows. I like both the 1778T and the S771, and will probably decide when I call to order. Its that close between them.

Zchord, I'm considering and elite, custom elite, or an Adamas. I'd love to walk into a store and see and Smt and Cvt side by side for a comparison.
I'll be looking to check out the 1778T.

zchord,

I hav a S771 and I love it! I love playing it and it can produce nearly any nuance of tonality I wand. I also have the 2001 Collector's Redwoo top (nulti hole) and it also is awsome! Both have distinct personalities and I wouldn't change them for the world!
