GC is playing at a Casino about 60 miles from my home this weekend. Wish I could go.

Forget the sixty miles, I'm amazed that there's CASINOS in Minnesota!! What do they BET on? . . . the thermometer??

We have a LOT of casinos here in Minnesota. Mostly run by the many Ojibwe, and to a lesser extent other Native American tribes. State run casinos have been a no-no in Minnesota, but the Soviern Band of Ojibwe can do what they like on their reservations. Casinos have been a booming buisness, and source of income for these impoverished communities. Personally, I think the whole casino scene is wrong, but I'm not judging. Perhaps if I were a member of the tribe that runs the "Mystic Lake" Casino (can't remember their name off hand), I might feel differently. There are under 200 members of this tribe, all profits are shared equally, making every member a multimillionare virtually overnight.

Okay, so they're similar to the Tribal Casinos out here in CT. I didn't THINK that there were state-run casinos there, that's why I was so surprised. Although, when I used to go out there during my "3M Days", there were rumors of doing riverboat gambling on the Mississip. That ever come to fruition?
I'm with ya' on the whole casino thing Norsey. If there were ever a tsunami headed for Atlantic City, I'd buy a ticket to watch.

Ojibwe:
I was once asked the proverbial "Desert Island CD" question. Unusually, the disc that ALWAYS makes it to the top of my list is the soundtrack from the TV show "Northern Exposure" basically because it is a VERY varied cross-section of musicology (Skynyrd, Booker T., Lanois, Mariam Makeba, klezmer, techno, an excerpt from a Puccini opera). A little of EVERYTHING.
There were two CD's made. To me the first one is much better than the second, but the second one has a couple of Ojibwe songs on it. Evidently, the Ojibwe often put their songs to some (at the time) popular WhiteMan's music. One tune is an Ojibwe love song set to (of all things) "Turkey In The Straw".
When my daughter was little, she used to laugh and get a kick out of singing along with it. If I played it now, she'd have me committed.

There's a huge, OLD, (in)famous state-run psychiatric hospital near where I live called Greystone Park. If I ever form another band I wanna call it "Greystone Park Debate Team".

Cliff,
Did you work at 3M out on Mcknight and 94? I grew up in downtown St. Paul before moving out to the sticks. Anyway, my sister worked in the chemical engineering (adhesives) dept. back in the early 80's.

lol! Could you possibly do an Ojibwe Turkey in the Straw rendition on the OFC CD project? I'd love to hear it!

Hey Norse,
It's ashamed you won't be able to see Glen, especially since he's so close.
He puts on a tremendous show and is a really great guy.
I had the honor of introducing him for his December show here. He and his band were really nice. catch him if you can-he does all his hits and his version of The William Tell Overture will knock your socks off!

I didn't know Glen Campbell still did casino shows; I know the best Campnbell concerts are the private venues where he has a pre-submitted list of requested music; you get to hear him do stuff he would never do in a regular show, early ballads and instrumentals, like the 'yakity axe' instrumental he did at his 1969 new jersey live concert/album; FASTER picking than the william tell overture....

Speaking of vintage GC, I recently had the good fortune to acquire two excellent sound/video quality, very early (one each from Feb '69 and Mar'69), Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour shows. I was hoping to see some footage of my GC six-string prototype and was not to be disappointed...he used this guitar exclusively for the entire two shows!

Besides playing on his own stuff he also jammed with Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, John Hartford (some blazing instrumental work in the "concert circle" segments), and the late great Roger Miller. One of the high points, however, was Glen joining Stevie Wonder for a most soulful rendition of Dylan's "Blowing in the Wind".

From the time I first got this guitar I have always loved the sweet, punchy midrange of its tone and that quality was coming through loud and clear on this old footage. This guitar is the only shiny/deep bowl 'O' I've ever played so maybe most of them sound this way, I don’t know.

Anyway, it was very cool to finally find some footage of, to quote that old Ovation ad that features Glen playing this guitar; "the world's best being played by the world's best".

My 68 Deluxe Balladeer (shiney bowl) has that same sound. Ovation built a company on that sound. I love it. Now if only Kim would send my guitar back to me.......

By the way, Wayne, did you ever trace you GC DB's route, from Glen to you? That might be an interesting story.

Is Glen Campbell still using Ovations at his concerts? I have seen recent footage of him in concert playing a stratocaster?

my '81 GC is almost done. they're letting the clear coat cure, right now. it won't be long. my fingernails are in great shape, from biting them off in anticipation. i'm going to miss Glen when he plays at our local casino. i went to see BB King there, and swore i would never support that form of public assistance again. the show was great; the people and logistics weren't.

I have a very good dvd of Glen Campbell in Concert. I think it's from about 2001. Glen uses a Hamer, fender, and an Ovation for the acoustic. As someone mentioned, he does a great William Tell Overture (incuding playing with the guitar on his head) and a wonderful solo at the end of Galveston.

Glen Campbell & son were seen playing 12-string Gibson & Martin D28 in an interview 2 months ago. Not sure if he still has any Ovation.

It could be a powerful marketing message if Glen Campbell & son played Ovation together. Alas, it didn't happen.

"Now if only Kim would send my guitar back to me......."

Hi Paul, what is Kim doing with your Balladeer? Repair work, or is he specing it out for the new Moody PI LTD model? Suggested retail rumoured to be $300 plus expenses. :)

"...did you ever trace you GC DB's route, from Glen to you? That might be an interesting story..."

Anyway, on the GC guitar, there was only one owner between Glen and myself. Session guitar ace Louie Shelton had met and played with fellow Arkansan Glen back when they were both doing the club scene around the Albuquerque, New Mexico area in about 1958. Glen later helped him get his first breaks as a session player and Louie even stayed with Glen when he first moved to LA. Louie eventually took over Glen’s chair in the studio when Glen’s solo career took off. Click on the above link for an interesting interview about some of this stuff, and the many records Louie has played on.

After the start of the Goodtime Hour, Glen needed a guitarist for the house band and called Louie and offered him the gig, which Louie accepted and did that for about two years. One time, during rehearsals, Louie was having problems with whatever guitar he was using and Glen said, “Here, you can have this one”…the GC signature proto. Louie kept it for thirty years until a couple of years ago, when he decided to scale down his collection and listed the GC guitar and original case, along with some other instruments, on Ebay. After about three days into the auction, I was the high (only) bidder so I contacted Louie and we worked out a mutual agreement to end the auction early.

Louie also kindly sent me three of his CDs: Guitar, Urban Culture and Nashville Guitars, the last of which is a compilation of Louie and many of the hot Nashville studio pickers. The first two are jazz albums and are fine examples of just what can be done with six strings. He is a really great, down to earth guy and it was so interesting talking to him about some of his gigs.

So basically, the path of the guitar to me was a fairly linear (from one virtuoso to another virtuose to...well...me  ) but very interesting one!

That's a great story (like most of the ones you've told me regarding your guitars). It's wonderful to be able to trace a guitar from celebrity to current owner. I don't recall seeing the GC on ebay, but at $200 a day plus expenses, I couldn't have afforded it. I had a shot at your Bluebird 12 string (thru our mutual friend Clark B.) and passed on it as I had just purchased Big Blue and was feeling, guitar wise, financialy poor. Then, later, when I discovered that you had it, and all that you put in to make it whole, I realized that it had gone to the right home. That's almost as staisfying as having it myself.

Ovation is doing a neck reset (for them, actually it's a bowl bend) and is tacking down the inlaid rosette. I should have it back in the next week or so.

As to the Moody P.I. signature model, I can't quite get Kim to agree to forego the usually bowl material for a Kevlar bowl. Oh well, someday.....

WHOA!!

My brain just lit up with the idea of a KEVLAR Bluebird, with a graphite fiber neck. Promotion campaign is donations to vice cops who have to work clubs under cover and need bullet proof protection, the bluebird decal has a tiny little bulletproof vest.

"I don't recall seeing the GC on ebay..."

Paul, as I recall, the listing title simply read "Glen Campbell Collectors Item", no mention of guitar, and nowhere in the title or description was the word "Ovation". So this might have caused some people to overlook it.
