I was wondering how many people in the club own Custom Legends? And what year your guitar was made in? And, what has been your opinion of the guitar over time?

I have an 1982 Custom Legend A/E, deep bowl, non-cutaway, black top, and I love it! There are so many different Ovation models I like for various reasons, but if I had to pick an all-time favorite, I would have to say the Custom Legend. Every one I've ever played sounded awesome and played "like buttah"! And cosmetically they are among the most beautiful instruments ever designed (IMHO).

I have a 96' in black. non cutaway, deep bowl Optima preamp.

First saw this guitar on the Simon & Garfunkel Concert in Central Park and was hooked on Ovations ever since.

I have a 1996, 1769 Sunburst and love the guitar. It's my first Ovation and I couldn't be happier! I'm on the lookout for a 12-string now.

I have owned numerous Custom Legends, and my main stage guitar at the moment is an #1869. While I am one of the guys whose eBay listings say that deeper bowl guitars give 'bigger sound', the tone of a deeper bowl guitar is not necessarily better than that of a shallow bowl -- as many others on this forum have observed -- and sometimes not as good.

The top and bracing on this shallow bowl guitar are of a quality that the guitar still sounds great unplugged when I need it that way, tho at least 95% of my application is through a sound system.

So, in my always modest opinion, there is good reason for the price differential between a Legend and a Custom Legend.

Mine is a 1977. Picked it up on EBay last year. Mint condition. Looks and plays great.

I have a 6759 12-string, mid-bowl, cutaway in natural finish with an Optima preamp. I believe it is 1999 ... I'll need to check the S/N page. Sweet, sweet, sweet.

I have mine on a stand here as I type this. The guitar is so pretty I seem to look at is as much as play it. Those Custom Legends are class acts.

Now that Paul has one of my 1619's -

I have a 1982 #1619 dark sunburst, a 1985 #1659 dark sunburst 12-str, and a 2000 #6759 black 12-str (used on Elton John Tour - no, not by me.)

Hmmm, need to go back out on eBay again, gaping hole on the wall and in my heart.

I have a 1998 model #1869 shallow bowel that is the easiest guitar I have ever played. Accoustically it leaves something to be desired but plugged in, which is why I bought this model, it is second to none. Even not plugged in, the tone is great... it just doesn't project. If you're into the traditional sound hole, in my opinion the CL is the Ovation model to get!

OK, so bringing a few threads together here ...

I was listening to Zevon's final release on the way in today, and clearly heard a CL12 on his version of "Knockin' in Heaven's Door". I guess he was still playing it in his final days? Either that, or another guitar maker has the classic Ovation 12 sound perfectly mimicked.

Anyone else hear the same thing?

An aside: The album is quite good, and in ways heartwrenching. It's amazing what can come out of knowing that the end is near, especially when the
individual is someone with the intelligence, wit, and sarcasm of WZ.
