Yesterday I converted a 12 string from the normal octave/double course to double course only: I.E. 2 low Es, 2 low As, 2 low Ds, 2 low Gs, 2 Bs, 2 Es. It does have a VERY full sound to it. (No it wasn't an Ovation).

I've currently got it strung with two sets of .008s, I intend to try .009s in a few days.

When you were tuning it did it blow out the bridge? Talk to Nils about his epoxy system. (inside joke...)

Call it the Voltiac XII, and post OSHA warnings all around it as a "flying parts area".

That's a lot of tension for the neck, even if your're tuned down. Hope it's a guitar your not precious about. Call it a Bajo-warpo. Mexican double course guitars (known as Bajo Sexto or Bajo quinto) use some doubled rather than octave pairs, though they are tuned differently to regular guitar. The top 3 strings are an octave lower than guitar & paired, the lower 3 are the same as regular guitar but the other string is an octave lower rather than an octave higher, which produces much lower tension. One of the tunings for bajo sexto is EADGCF.
