I have an '89 1867 Legend. My friend just bought a new 1867 Legend. The guitars are quite different. His guitar's neck is wood, mine is solid black plastic. Though I haven't measured it, the Ovation web site says mine has a 25 1/4" scale and his is 24 1/4.

What's the deal with the different necks?

Steve,

I can assure you that your 1867 Legend does NOT have a solid black plastic neck. I'm guessing that your guitar top is black. Black finish Legends of that era have the neck and headstock also painted black. But underneith it is the same wood structure as your friends new one. Also the scale length should be the same 25-1/4 inch.

I have 1986 and 1989 #1867 Legends that I use regularly. Both are black, and both have black finished necks that have a very different feel from the unfinished necks. They seem to have more of a rounded profile to them, which may add to the 'plastic' feel.

But they are definitely wooden necks.

I'll trust you guys but it sure hardly feels like wood. It's almost like a plastic shell over the wood. Must be a thick laquer.

Welcome to the board, you are not the first to call the black painted neck plastic. The subject came up on some other posts. I haven't seen one, but I assume the finish is quite thick as it hides the wood grain. The Legend is a very popular guitar here.

I'm not sure how think the black paint is but it certainly does hide the fact that the neck is wood. Just the same way the black painted soundboards hides the wood grains in the soundboard. The gloss finished black necks feel more natural(wood) to me than the matte finish ones. Dave

Sornord,
These guys are telling you right about the neck. As far as scale length goes, get the old tape measure out, nut to saddle distance equals scale length, also nut to 12th fret equals 1/2 the scale length (good to know if you only have the neck of a guitar or bass, that way you can determine what scale length it requires in order to put on another body)
