Take a look at this

I kinda like the clean look without the epaulettes. As this was a special order I wonder if there was an extra charge for having no epaulettes :D

I wonder if this gave Ovation the idea for the Tangent and Elite T?

It is a shallow bowl guitar, which adds to the special order dimension. I believe Sam Ash had a run of shallow bowl Adamas models specially made for them.

I had one of these for a while, but found that Kaman doesn't offer shallow bowl Adamas guitars for a good reason: they usually don't sound very good. In fact, the one I had didn't sound as any other shallow bowl USA Ovation I had.

I inquired of one of the execs at Kaman, who confirmed that they had found that it seems to take at least a mid-depth bowl to generate the sound to make the Adamas SMT top resonate well. No one there may swear to having told me that, but it IS what I was told.

All that notwithstanding, it IS a very cool looking guitar which I would be happy to have as a stage acoustic/electric. So I bid on it. :p

At last, we discover the identity of "Roundback"
I just checked the reciept for a Viper Bass I bought from you a while ago & sure enough it's Paul Blanchard. Your identity has been the subject of disscussion here on a few occasions

Well, you can see from my member number that I signed up early and posted late. It was some of those 'roundback' discussions that helped me decide to do more than just lurk.

I also noticed that there just aren't enough members named Paul....

I certainly welcome one more Paul, especially one who has caused us much speculation and who appears to be an Ovationist for many years. It also seems to give us one more reliable source for our favorite guitars.

Welcome "Roundback" from a bunch of round fronts.

If truth be known, a 'round front' is why I play shallow bowl guitars on stage. Anything with a deeper bowl starts to tilt to a carpal tunnel syndrome causing angle. I suppose I could get around that if I changed my strap length and wore the guitar around my knees as seems de rigueur for so many of the younger modern musicians. I would end up needing orthopedic help soon or later, anyway, so I will just stick with the shallow bowls.

Thank you for allowing me this moment of deep reflection.... or was that mid-depth. No, I think it is shallow.... :D

Congrats, Dave!

I see you've added another unique guitar to your collection. Let us know how this one sounds when you get it. It sure looks sharp!

I got my SS adamas today. I don't even know what to call this thing. I guess it's basically an Adamas SMT with SS bowl and no wood epaulets.
It's one of the coolest looking Ovations I've ever seen. It's almost like a greyburst finish. In the center of the top it's more greyish and you can faintly see the fiber grains. Toward the edge it fades to solid gloss black. Very cool. Optima pre-amp. Also nice that there are no fret board markers, just side dots. I like it this way. The acoustic sound is certainly thinner than a deep bowl. I compared it one on one with my SS Legend and SS Elite. It's far better than either of those. Much more balanced and more mellow. I'm overall thrilled with it. The neck is perfect and there is not one single mark on the guitar. The amazing thing is how thin the top looks at the sound holes. Looking at an Elite, which has a thicker top to begin with, plus the wood epaulets it looks about 5x thicker than this adamas top. Unfortunately the guitar is so plain black on black and glossy that it's really hard to photograph.

One more thing, there is no label inside the guitar. You can see some glue where it used to be. I'm guessing that the previous owner removed it to preserve the "black on black" motif. Maybe I should call this my Johnny Cash Man In Black guitar (even though JC played Martins). Does anyone have experience with getting a replacement label from the factory. I imagine they would require you return the guitar to them and have them install it (wouldn't want a USA label ending up on someone's import guitar). I played quite a lot last night and I can't say enough how much I like this guitar. Anyone want to buy a spotless SS Elite in black? Dave

contact John budney or Kim Keller in service in reference to the label and see what they tell you.
