Anybody out there do their own minor fretwork (leveling, dressing, etc.)? Can you recommend any instructional sources (books, videos) that you have found useful? I am thinking about trying to learn to do minor fretwork with some cheap POS's I have around the house. Thanks.

I have not tried it, but I understand that the instructional videos from StewMac are pretty good. I think their website also has info sheets you can download. www.stewmac.com

There's also some guy on Ebay who sells DIY fretwork kits for $12.95. I would assume they come with instructions.
Good luck, and go slow,

Contact StewMac and get their catalog. You (all of you) may never order anything, but it's real interesting to go through and a great reference source to have.

Thanks for the info! I'll check out stewmac. Yeah, I do plan on taking it slow. I tap alot and my frets are in near constant need of work. It would be nice to be able to do it myself. Thanks for the tips.

This looks like a nice page. I love this website. It's taught me a lot.

FRETS.COM When Frets Go Wrong

If I had the time and money for all the tools, I'd love to build a guitar from one of the fine Stewart-Macdonald kits.

The StewMac catalog IS great!
(If even just for "bathroom reading") :D

While reading through it once, I got the lame-brained idea of possibly ordering one of their resonator-guitar kits. Then I sobered-up and said:
"Yeah!, you work INSANE hours, live in an apartment, are a divorced father, and play out just about every weekend! . . you've got PLENTY of time (and space) to build a guitar!!!

Seemed like a good idea at the time.

I've since decided that if I'm gonna get a resonator, I'm gonna look for a beat-up, old National to start with. Seems I've been bitten by "the bug"! DAMN that cwk2!!! :D

I have been thinking about assembling my own custom tele, even calculated it.

At $ 900,- I would have a thinline tele, maple/ebony neck, solid alder body, gold hardware, P90 neck p/u, tele bridge p/u and for 200 dollars more i could install the ghost piezo system including a blending pot.

Too bad i don't have 900 dollar at the moment.

It's fun to read their catalog and.

Cliff, a brand new National will be way cheaper than a beat-up old one. Cheaper still, buy one of the many imported copies, pull out the hub-caps they use as cones & have some OMI or Quaterman cones installed. While the end result wont have the mojo of a vintage National it'll take a very good ear indeed to tell the difference soundwise from the real thing.

Clifford:

Bring your slothead. I'll make certain that you have room in that case, when you go home, for a resonator.
