I know this is not everyone's cup 'o tea, but I need to know if any of you know a good 411 source for digital recording methods...I.E. taking multitracked music from a 4-track and putting it on something other than a cassette deck.
I don't really want to rely on using the computer either. I was thinking of a stand-alone CD recorder or a mini-disc recorder.
Anyone have any experience in this area?

Thanks in advance.

If you are just transferring your stereo mixes to a digital format, CD is definitely the way to go. They are dirt cheap compared to other media such as MD or Compact Flash, etc. Plus, CD burners are getting very affordable. You can also then play your resulting CD-Rs in just about any CD player. If you are talking about doing additional tracking, your best bet is probably a hard-disk recorder/CD burner such as the Korg Al mentioned. I have a Yamaha AW16G and love it.

The prices of these digital records is amazing. I have a Zoom 802CD I picked up for $575. In addition to being an 8-track recorder it has a build in CD burner as well as a drum machine. You can pick one up without the CD for about $100 less, then pick up a lite-on CD recorder for under $100 if you want. The Korg and the Yamaha are also fine recorders.

Gee, I remember when a 4 track reel 2 reel with simo-sync was a great buy for $1200.

Related to this thread...Has anyone had any experience with the Fostex MR-8, 8 track digital multitrack recorder? It generally sells for $299 but I've seen it for as low as $250. Seems like a great deal if advertised correctly by Fostex; see:

Any experience with this simple recorder is appreciated. Craig
