My Custom Legend has a gold OVATION decal on the headstock instead of the inlaid logo that most Custom Legends have. Can you guys out there with Custom Legends tell me what type of logo your guitar has. Mine is the first I have seen with a decal instead of the inlaid logo. I wonder how common this was?

Not sure how common the gold was, but my 96' has the inlayed pearl logo.

I have a 1982 model Custom Legend and it also has a pearl logo. And to whoever it was asking about finish cracks a while back , mine has none and it's 21 yrs. old and still going strong.

Paul, i woudn't worry about having the only custom legend with a gold headstock inlay..
I mean who cares that it has a logo that cost seven cents and is on every korean celebrity..Forget the fact that your guitar is the top of the line and has abalone inlays everywhere "exept" the headstock...
Dont let it bother you and dont loose any sleep over it!! LOL....

Just kidding

What year is this Custom Legend? I have seen Adamas guitars with an Ovation decal on the headstock instead of an Adamas inlay, and was told that it was done that way at the factory for some reason. Maybe the inlay guy was sick that day or they ran out of abalone.... But, like Sam says, no big deal, eh?

I agree; it is odd.

Thanks Sam, (lol) I don't mind the gold decal. It looks good with the sunburst finish. My Custom Legend was made in 1979. Beautiful guitar, just no inlaid logo. Anyone else have one like this?

Paul, im sure the gold looks fine with the sunburst finish but close your eyes and imagine big, bright, shiny, "ABALONE" inlayed headstock.OOOHHH BABY!! Not that there is anything wrong with gold though.. :D :D

I have it on good authority that it was only factory-second Custom Legends that received the "inferior" transfer logos. They also had Fishman pickups & experimental bowls made by Tuperware. Sound like shit but boy they keep that lettuce crisp!!!

I think the answer is that it is a pre-1980. I believe the 1980 Catalog shows pearl. Paul's guitar, by serial number shows 1979 yet the seller stated 1978. Believe we will eventually find that after the period 1978-1979, Ovation used the pearl. Any one else have a CL between 1974-1979?

As Sam brought up, the slothead CL 12 accoustic that was on eBay last week had gold - seller never gave me the serial number so don't know the year but I believe it to be pre-1980.

The CL 12 string (acoustic, not a/e) that I bought in '81 and had just been brought up from the January, 1981 Los Angeles NAMM - that was the pearl inlay. Never checked if it was made in 1980 or 1981 - however if it was at NAMM in January of '81, most likely it was 1980 production. My 1982, 1985, and 2000 years have the pearl.

Be nice guys...Paul H. may want his 2002 Collectors back. Of course, Paul H. can always trade me for my #1619 1982 with pearl but that has some finish cracks - to me, just a little character.

I can recall some early CL's with transfer (silk-screened?) rather than pearl logo's. I think they may have also had different truss rod covers. They had walnut rod-covers with an inlaid pearl diamond rather than the usual carving. I think they had inlaid diamonds on the bridge as well.
