Joined: July 2008 Posts: 14 Location: Chestertown, MD | So I picked up an '80 Viper a couple months back, and it had a broken pickguard, which someone had attempted to repair. I ordered a new pickguard from WD, only to discover that it had an extra hole...my Viper has its input on the lower bout, which from what I gather is not original, but not a bad arrangement (the work was very well done). Now I am left w/ two choices: get a custom pickguard or utilize the extra hole somehow. Before I spend more $ on a new pickguard, does anyone have any ideas on useful mods, e.g., phase switch, on/off switch, or something else?

Have me make you a Custom Wood Veneer PG with as many holes as you want. Put some Duct Tape behind it and fill the hole with Abalone or Koa. Cover it with a Nintendo Controller Invite some Friends from around the World to come over, drink beer and work on your guitar!

I'd like to know a bit more about the varitone and custom pickguard ideas. The cut-out button was my first thought, but I didn't know if anyone had tried phase switching. I was thinking sticking to the original config was the way, but now that the jack's in the wrong place (though better a place, IMO) I'm willing to explore other possibilities. Pics of the Viper under discussion are in my gallery. It really is quite clean, and, so I thought, original. Does it appear to be a refinish to anyone? The frets are like new, and the body's got no real nicks of any sort that it's surprising someone would've gone to the effort of moving the input jack, and then left it unplayed.
